ReplyResponding to J, that's an interesting point. People I know who live in countries with single-payer systems often complain about some of the services, but it nonetheless always strikes me that a comparison not often used with government-covered insurance is that of education--the U.S. has a "single-payer" education system which, though many would argue is dysfunctional, nonetheless still provides some level of schooling for all citizens. Might not mandated insurance coverage (or single-payer) provide the equivalent in terms of healthcare? One might well argue that what the U.S. has now is an all-or-nothing system which, in the world of education, would find its equivalent in those who cannot afford schooling (no doubt an increasing share of citizens) being denied all access to it, with the rest purchasing access on a sliding scale according to their resources. Would anyone put up with such a system in education? I don't have the answer, just food for thought.

Reply@ Brie: From what Karen Barton in Richfield Community Development told me, unless a lease has been established for a "retail space," any names of possible occupants, if they exist at all, are not being released. Firm opening dates currently known were included in the article. Patch will be keeping up on Richfield development--'downtown' and elsewhere--as it progresses.

Reply@ EA: Thanks for commenting. What would you say are the factors most affecting that decision for you and your family? I agree, it would be nice to have a walkable sidewalk cafe or restaurant in the city. I think the new Pizza Luce may include a sidewalk cafe-like area, but I'm not absolutely sure. If you decided to move, where might you go?

ReplyInteresting discussion going on here this morning and afternoon. I'm wondering what the rubric is for delineating "undesirable" projects from those deemed merely "average." Who would get to make those kinds of decisions? What makes a project enhance the city (anyone who has attended an HRA meeting knows there are wildly different ideas about this)? I'd honestly like to hear people's opinions, hope some are still reading and respond.

Reply@ cluger: From the map posted on Minnesota Public Radio, it certainly appears that under the new district lines Rep. Wagenius and Rep. Slocum will be vying for the same seat (63B). With only a few city blocks sometimes making all the difference, stay tuned to see what impact redistricting will have on Richfield's state legislators.

On the article Pillsbury Commons Development Proposal Faces Opposition

According to Ron Clark Construction & Design spokesperson Mike Roebuck, units planned for Pillsbury Commons do not qualify as subsidized or Section 8 housing, as each tenant would pay the full amount of their rent. As part of the Minnesota Housing and Finance Agency (MHFA) program which Ron Clark Construction expects will finance much of the project, rents at Pillsbury Commons would be 50 percent of the MHFA published rates for Hennepin County. Residents will need to meet minimum and maximum income levels to qualify; currently a family of four could have an income level of no more than $49,620. I'm not sure about the availability of units for undocumented immigrants -- I simply don't know what kind of paperwork would need to be provided in order for residents to qualify for the MHFA guidelines, or whether such documentation would be prohibitive for undocumented immigrants interested in renting there.
