The Pioneer Press reported that some east metro legislators say their regions are being left out of rail plans. Patch wants to know what you think.
Most of the recent debate over rail has been between those who want to spend more money on light rail and those who prefer spending the money on roads and buses. On Sunday, though, the Pioneer Press had a look at a light issue that hasn’t garnered as much attention: Is the east metro getting its share of rail projects? The paper notes that St. Paul’s only rail line right now is Amtrak and that the city is on track to add just one light rail line, the Central Corridor Light Rail line running between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minneapolis, on the other hand, could someday be the starting point of the Hiawatha, Southwest, Bottineau, Central Corridor and Northstar lines. Some east metro legislators say that’s not fair. State officials and …

Yom Kippur is, in short, the holiest day of the year in Jewish religion and culture. It is also referred to as the “Day of Atonement,” and the tradition is to solemnly fast for repentance and atonement of sins. Yom Kippur marks the end of the annual High Holy Day period (Sept. 16 to Sept. 26 in 2012), which begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. On Sept. 25, observation will begin at sunset. The west metro, of course, has a rich Jewish tradition, and many local religious institutions will be marking the holiday. Follow the links below for information from a specific institution: Yom Kippur falls annually on the 10th day of Tishrei, a month on the Hebrew calendar, which is nine days after the first day of Rosh Hashanah. Each week we'll take a quick trip around the West Metro from a football roundup. Here's a look at the games from Thursday night in Week One.
There were some tight-knit games and a couple of blowouts in Week One of the Minnesota High School League football season, but no huge upsets to rock the prep sports world in Thursday night's heat. Maple Grove, Wayzata and Osseo were all big winners in the new Class 6A, with St. Michael-Albertville falling to Cambridge-Isanti in a mild upset over the Mississippi 8. Here's a look around the West Metro. Wayzata 52, Bloomington Jefferson 7 Team Purple looks like it's ready to make another run to the Mall of America turf, dominating from the start of its opening night matchup at home versus Bloomington Jefferson. In May, the county lost about 2,000 jobs. The state unemployment rate dropped slightly, while the nation's rate increased.
High-profile redevelopment projects are a can’t-miss sign of growth here in Hopkins, but Hennepin County’s unemployment increased slightly in May as about 2,000 jobs were lost. The county’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in May, according to Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development. The unemployment level remains 0.9 percent less than the 6 percent reported in May 2011. But it’s still higher than the 4.8 percent reported in April 2012, which had been the lowest unemployment level for the county since May 2008. In May, 33,429 people out of the county’s 661,518-person labor force was unemployed. TwinWest Chamber President Bruce Nustad said a rate that stable is “somewhat encouraging.” But he expects the unemployment…

No idea why Texas has it. And that's not even the full system, the map is from around 20 years before the peak build-out. If I get a moment, I'll flip through my copy of Twin Cities by Trolley. I'm pretty sure that the book lists the most profitable streetcar lines, and I'm also sure that the light rail lines currently in the works generally follow the most profitable lines from the old system. …   more ›
