Joe Coleman Asks to be Released from Gophers

The former Hopkins basketball star’s plans are not known.

Former Hopkins High School basketball star Joe Coleman on Tuesday asked University of Minnesota Coach Richard Pitino to be released from the team, the Pioneer Press reported. The Pioneer story does say what plans Coleman has if he’s released. Coleman was named Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball in 2011 and helped the Royals to three straight Class AAAA title championships. Coleman kicked off his time with the Gophers by winning the university’s annual dunk contest in his freshman year. And in January of that season, he was named the Big 10 freshman of the week. He’s scored 516 total points—averaging 7.2 points per game and shooting .467, according to the University of Minnesota. Click here to read the full story.

Coffey Receives MVP Award at All-America Game

The Hopkins basketball star put up 12 points in Saturday’s game.

Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey received the Purple Team’s MVP award at Saturday’s Women's Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game, the association announced. The game, played in New Orleans on the same court as the NCAA women’s Final Four, featured the top 20 high school seniors in the country. Coffey scored 12 points, hitting five of nine shots from the field. She also snagged one steal and three rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Purple Team lost to the Black Team 70-74. Coffey entered the game coming off a standout season. She was named the player of this year’s state championship game, chosen as Breakdown Sports USA’s No. 2 player in the state and honored with All State recognition. She also played in the …

Coffey Plays in McDonald’s All-American Game

Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey put up two points and snagged six rebounds in Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American Game, the Chicago Tribune reported. Coffey played on the East team, which lost 92-64. The McDonald’s All-American game is a prestigious tournament for rising stars. Coffey was among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. Just 24 girls and 24 boys were selected for the final roster. Coffey and Braham High School’s Rebekah Dahlman were just the ninth and 10th Minnesotans to be named McDonald's All-Americans. Chambers Helps Harvard to First NCAA Tournament Victory

The one-time Hopkins star and Ivy League rookie of the year scored five points against New Mexico.

One-time Hopkins star Siyani Chambers continued his outstanding freshman season at Harvard by helping the Crimson to its first NCAA tournament victory Thursday night. The 14th-seeded Crimson upset No. 3 seed New Mexico 68-62. Chambers made five points and seven assists and snagged two rebounds during 40 minutes of play, according to the ESPN box score. Harvard will next take on sixth-seeded Arizona at 5:10 p.m. March 23 in the Round of 32. The win follows Chambers’ unanimous selection as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy pick. Hopkins Girls Claim Third Straight Basketball Championship

The girls beat Bloomington Kennedy 68-45 Saturday at the Target Center.

For the third year in a row, the Hopkins girls are the class AAAA basketball champions. The Royals claimed the title in convincing fashion, beating No. 2 seed Bloomington Kennedy Eagles 68-45 Saturday at the Target Center. Echoing their performance against Osseo in the semifinal, the Royals’ missed shots allowed Bloomington Kennedy to keep it close in the first half. Hopkins finished the half up 28-26—hitting just seven of 29 shots field goals, or 24.1 percent of their shots from the court. That allowed for some swings in the early part of the game, with the Eagles up by as much as five at one point. The Hopkins girls will once again be playing for a state basketball championship. The No. 1-ranked Royals advanced to the state tournament class AAAA final by beating No. 4 Osseo 72-50. Missed shots by the Royals allowed Osseo to keep it close through most of the first period. The normally reliable Nia Coffey scored just seven points—hitting two for 12 from the court, including zero for two three pointers. Erin O'Toole, on the other hand, sank 12 points total to beat her 10 points per game average. Just days after winning his sixth rookie of the week award, one-time Hopkins star Siyani Chambers has been unanimously chosen as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy pick, the league announced Wednesday. Chambers led the league in assists (5.7 assists per game) and minutes per game (37.8), while his 12.9 points per game rank him sixth. His six Rookie of the Week awards tie him for fifth most in conference history. Last weekend, Chambers helped Harvard to its third straight Ivy League title, scoring 16 points in games against Columbia and Cornell. Royals Breeze Past STMA in 1st Round of State Girls Basketball Tourney

No. 1 seed Hopkins sailed through the class AAAA quarterfinal of the state girls basketball tournament with a 77-58 victory over St. Michael-Albertville. Hopkins got jumped out to an early lead—scoring 40 points to STMA’s 22 in the first period. The Knights’ second-period total was within a point of the Royals’ 37 points—including five free throws in the final two minutes—but the damage had already been done by then. Hopkins took advantage of STMA’s inability to hold on to the ball, scoring 24 points off Knights turnovers. McDonald’s All American Nia Coffey continued her strong season with a game-leading 22 points. Chambers Named Rookie of The Week Six Times in Regular Season

Former Hopkins High School basketball star Siyani Chambers is making a big splash on the collegiate level in his freshman year. The Harvard point guard was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the sixth time Monday, the Ivy League announced. Chambers helped the Crimson to its third straight Ivy League title, scoring 16 points in games against Columbia and Cornell. He also snagged three rebounds and had two steals against Columbia and had four rebounds against Cornell. On Monday, Chambers will find out where he and the rest of the Crimson team will start the postseason. The Hopkins alumnus is no stranger to success. Breakdown Sports USA Names Hopkins Girls as Top Basketball Team in MN

The site’s annual state tournament preview, which predicts that Hopkins will win the championship, also named Nia Coffey the No. 2 player in the state.

Hopkins High School basketball teams feature prominently in Breakdown Sports USA’s annual March Madness state tournament preview, which was released Tuesday. The annual publication declared the Royals as the top girls team regardless of class and predicted that they’d win section 6AAAA—“also known as ‘The Hopkins Section,’” the magazine wrote—and then go on to win the class AAAA championship. Hopkins senior Nia Coffey received a slew of individual honors. The senior was named as the No. 2 player in the state, the Class AAAA player of the year, the section 6AAAA player of the year and a finalist for best scoring performance.
