Both boys and girls teams finished sixth in team competition.

Hopkins High School’s Jakob Ellingson capped off his final year of high school Nordic skiing by winning Tuesday’s state championship at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. Nordic Skiing: Boys Finish 2nd, Girls Finish 3rd

Juniors Harris Dirnberger and Sarah Benton set the pace for the Royals.

Hopkins Nordic skiers proved again that the Royals program is among the strongest in the state. The boys took second place in Thursday’s state meet—missing the championship by just three points. Juniors Harris Dirnberger and Jakob Ellingson led the way for the Royals with back-to-back pursuit finishes of sixth and seventh place, respectively. Their success bodes well for next season as Dirnberger and Ellingson were the fastest racers who won’t be graduating this year. The girls edged out Stillwater to place third in their meet. Junior Sarah Benton set the pace for the Royals with a 13th-place pursuit finish. Ninth grader Siena Ellingson and senior Julia Lavanger kept the race close with 19th- and 20th-place finishes, respectively.   ***   …

Hopkins Nordic Skiers Dream of White Christmas

With the ongoing snow shortage, the athletes have had to find other ways to train.

On Friday, Hopkins High School junior Sam Arneson put on his blue Lycra ski suit, grabbed his ski poles and headed into the cold as he does most days of the week. But instead of gliding off across the snow, the Nordic skier rolled across the pavement on a pair of roller skis. The feeling is a familiar one this year for Hopkins Nordic skiers. Perhaps no one is dreaming of a white Christmas more than they are. The snow shortage has forced the skiers to make do with alternatives like roller skis, drills on dry land and lots of running. “I did cross country (running), so it just feels like one long season,” said Allison Schaefer, a senior and team captain. Coach Rob Fuhr agreed that this year’s lack of snow has been particularly bad. Last week…

(Video) Hopkins Whiz Kid: Male Rookie of the Year

Hopkins Sophmore, Harris Dirnberger, brings home significant wins from the Junior Olympics and shares his love of cross country skiing.

Get ready—get set—and have fun! For Hopkins sophomore Harris Dirnberger, these are words to live and race by. So far, it's working for him. At the 2011 Cross Country Junior Olympics, Dirnberger placed third in the Classic Mass Start relay in the J2 division despite the challenge of losing and replacing his ski near the three-kilometer mark. He also helped his team place first in the Classic Relay with his aggressive performance as anchor, chasing down and passing the leading team to ski in a six-second win. Dirnberger's amazing performance at his first Junior Olympics earned him the title Male Rookie of the Year for the Midwest division. “Harris especially does well at mass start races going head to head with those he can chase and getting…

Hopkins Nordic Ski Teams Finish Third at Tough Lake Conference Meet

Both the boys and girls varsity teams finished in the middle of the pack of the 5K freestyle race at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington.

Kevin Kos, co-head coach of the Hopkins Nordic ski teams, knew Wednesday's Lake Conference 5K freestyle meet was going to be hard for his teams. "This is a brutal conference," he said of the five-team conference that includes Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina, Wayzata and Eden Prairie. On top of that, Wednesday's course, at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington "is one of the toughest around." Despite those daunting circumstances, Kos was very happy afterward. "I'm ecstatic with many of their results," he said. Both the Royals' boys and girls varsity teams finished third in the team standings. The boys, led by Connor Benton's second–place finish in the individual race, scored 523 points. Edina finished first, with 536 points. Benton, a senior …
