The students are going to a variety of schools across the country.
Fourteen Hopkins High School athletes signed to play at the collegiate level Wednesday, including two athletes who signed with Division I teams. Taylor Anderson will be running track for the University of Connecticut, while Sarah Klecker will be running cross-country for the University of Minnesota. Both programs are Division I. “I chose the U of M just because the whole team atmosphere, the whole cross-country team, is like one big family and it reminds me a lot of my team at Hopkins here,” Klecker said. The following students also signed: The athletes have earned a total of 54 varsity letters while in high school. But they’re not just athletes. Nia Coffey, Erin O’Toole and Mikaala Shackelford all committed to play with Division I schools.
Three of Hopkins High School’s top girls basketball players signed to play at the collegiate level on Wednesday. Guard Nia Coffey signed with Northwestern University. Forward Erin O’Toole signed with the University of North Dakota. And Guard Mikaala Shackelford signed with the University of Illinois. The scholarships the three received are worth a combined $100,000 per year. “These are three student athletes that have made our department very, very proud,” said Hopkins Activity Director Dan Johnson. “They’ve made our school proud with their academic prowess. … And athletically, of course, they’ve been a part of a couple state championship teams and multiple conference championship teams and section championship teams. National Signing Day took place Wednesday at Hopkins High School.
Parents posed for photos with their children. Friends clapped them on the back. Wednesday was a big day for 10 Hopkins student-athletes who formally committed to play for college teams across the country. The following students signed papers or formally committed to a college at Hopkins High School’s National Signing Day event. Dan Johnson, director of athletics and activities, noted that the students excel off the field as well as on it. Together, they have a cumulative 3.94 GPA. All of them are ranked in the top 10 or 12 percent of their class. “They’re just 10 young people we’re so proud of,” Johnson said. Chambers said he can’t wait to head off to Harvard.
