Sydney Coffey Named MAAC Rookie of the Week — Again

The former Hopkins star was recognized for her performance this weekend against Rider and Loyola.

For the second time this year, former Hopkins basketball star Sydney Coffey has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. “Coffey continues to cement herself as one of the best rookies in the MAAC, averaging nine points and 4.5 rebounds while making her fourth career start in Marist (College’s) two dominating wins this past weekend,” the conference stated. She started Sunday against Loyola, scored 16 points and snagged four rebounds—in addition to blocking two shots and going five for six from the free throw line. Former Hopkins Star Brianna Williams Leaves UND

She left the team effective immediately and intends to transfer to another school after the spring semester.

Former Hopkins High School star Brianna Williams is leaving the University of North Dakota after two years with the team, coach Travis Brewster announced Tuesday on the UND athletics website. Williams is leaving the program, effective immediately, with fellow sophomore Cy'erra Mills, an Osseo High School graduate. Both intend to transfer to unspecified schools after the spring semester. UND finishes its regular season March 9. Williams played in all 27 games of this season. She made 19 starts and averaged 18.9 minutes and 3.5 points per game. In her freshman season, she played in 19 games and made four starts. At Hopkins, Williams helped the Royals win the 2011 state championship. She scored six points in the final game against Eden …

Hopkins' Coffey Selected for McDonald’s All American Team

She was selected for the final roster during a Selection Show on ESPNU.

Hopkins High School basketball star Nia Coffey was selected to the 2013 McDonald’s All American Girls Team during a Selection Show on ESPNU. Coffey and Braham High School’s Rebekah Dahlman were the ninth and 10th Minnesotans to be named McDonald's All Americans. Coffey is among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. Just 24 girls and 24 boys were selected for the final roster. Coffey, who led her team to the past two Class 4A championships, is ranked second in the state for the 2013 class, according to Breakdown Sports USA. Hopkins High School basketball star Nia Coffey is one of three Minnesota nominees to the 2013 McDonald’s All American Girls Team, organizers announced Tuesday. Coffey is among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. The final roster of 24 girls and 24 boys will be announced at 5 p.m. Feb. 14 during the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Show on ESPNU. “This list of McDonald’s All American Games Nominees represents the finest prep talent in the country, and we are privileged to acknowledge them for their career success on the court, in the classroom and in the community,” a news release quoted Morgan Wootten, McDonald’s …

Tartan Edges Out Hopkins at Tip Off Classic

The Royals lost 88-85 despite a late-game run.

Hopkins fought back to narrow a 13 point deficit at the half but was still edged out by Oakdale’s Tartan High School during Saturday’s Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic. The Royals boys lagged 39-52 at the end of the first period. Although they outscored Tartan in the second 46-36, it wasn’t enough to clinch the victory. In the end, Tartan emerged with a close 88-85 win. Hopkins senior Jamal Davis led the Royals with 24 points—and tied Tartan’s Kharie Kirkland for the game. Junior Jake Wright and Freshman Amir Coffey were No. 2 and 3 for the Roayls with 18 points and 14 points, respectively. Hopkins Girls, Boys Secure Wins at Tip Off Classic

The girls beat Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. The boys beat Centennial 73-62.

Both Hopkins boys’ and girls’ teams came away with wins Saturday at the Ninth-Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center. In what Breakdown Sports USA called “arguably the most physical game of the day” the Royals’ girls’ team defeated Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. Hopkins led by just five points at the end of the first half but surged ahead in the second. Hopkins senior Nia Coffey, whom Breakdown Sports USA ranked second in its preseason rankings, led the game with 19 points. Freshman Nia Hollie was second for the Royals with 12 points. With the win, the Hopkins girls remain unbeaten. For their next game, they’ll travel to Lakeville South on Dec. 4. In one of two boys games at this weekend’s girls’ Tip Off …

Girls Tip Off Classic Takes Place Saturday at Lindbergh Center

Hopkins’ girls and boys teams will both play in the ninth annual event.

Hopkins is set to rev up the girls’ basketball season Saturday with the Ninth-Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center. The invitational will have 15 games with teams from Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas. There will be: Start times run from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Hopkins plays Olathe Northwest (KS) at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Court. The Royals boys’ team is also playing in one of the event’s two boys games—a 6 p.m. matchup against Centennial on the Main Court. Coffey Named Rookie of the Week

The former Hopkins star helped lead Marist College to a 56-45 victory over Princeton.

After her first collegiate start and third collegiate game, former Hopkins basketball star Sydney Coffey has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, Marist athletics announced Monday. The honor follows a Marist victory Saturday in which Coffey helped her team to a 56-45 win over Princeton. Coffey scored 13 points, held 2012 All-American Niveen Rasheed to 3-17 shooting and forced Rasheed into five turnovers. Coffey is the quickest player to start under Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis, who’s in his 11th season as the team’s head coach. In high school, she was a member of the Royals girls basketball team that won back-to-back state championships in 2011 and 2012 and a Miss Basketball finalist.   Follow us on …

Three Hopkins Basketball Players Commit on National Signing Day

Nia Coffey, Erin O’Toole and Mikaala Shackelford all committed to play with Division I schools.

Three of Hopkins High School’s top girls basketball players signed to play at the collegiate level on Wednesday. Guard Nia Coffey signed with Northwestern University. Forward Erin O’Toole signed with the University of North Dakota. And Guard Mikaala Shackelford signed with the University of Illinois. The scholarships the three received are worth a combined $100,000 per year. “These are three student athletes that have made our department very, very proud,” said Hopkins Activity Director Dan Johnson. “They’ve made our school proud with their academic prowess. … And athletically, of course, they’ve been a part of a couple state championship teams and multiple conference championship teams and section championship teams. Hopkins Grad Royce White Goes No. 16 in NBA Draft

The 2009 Mr. Basketball winner will be playing for the Houston Rockets.

Hopkins High School grad and 2009 Minnesota Mr. Basketball winner Royce White was selected by the Houston Rockets on Thursday as the No. 16 pick in the first round of the 2012 NBA draft. About 250 people on hand for White's draft party at the Sukup Practice Facility in Ames, IA, rose to their feet and cheered when NBA Commissioner David Stern announced White's name. White transferred to Hopkins in his senior year from DeLaSalle High School, and won state championships with Hopkins in 2009 and DeLaSalle in 2006. A USA Today national poll ranked Hopkins 10th in the country after its 2009 championship. A ball handling, bruising foward, White stood out in his one year at Iowa State after transferring from Minnesota following troubles. He …
