Minnehaha Creek to Honor Hopkins on Thursday

The city will be recognized as an ‘outstanding partner’ because of its collaboration with the watershed district.

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is recognizing Hopkins’ partnership with the district on water quality efforts. On Thursday, the city will be among the residents and organizations honored at the district’s annual “Watershed Heroes” awards celebration. The awards recognize those who have made significant contributions to clean water efforts. The watershed district will honor Hopkins with its Outstanding Partner Award because of the entity’s collaboration on efforts to restore Minnehaha Creek at Blake Road. Hopkins and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District have been working together to improve the Cottageville Park area. The watershed district bought properties surrounding the park and demolished the buildings. The city is paying for…

Cottageville Park Planning Events Start Today

The process begins with an art event for the public to imagine possibilities for the newly expanded park.

Public input on the Cottageville Park redesign kicks off in earnest next week with an art event at the soon-to-be revamped green space. Artist Ta-coumba T. Aiken will lead residents in a creative workshop starting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 that will help residents share their thoughts and visions for the park. Attendees are invited to bring old magazines to use for collage materials, opinions and ideas. The event is the first of several planned in the next couple weeks for the community to decide how the newly expanded park should look: The Cottageville Park project is a partnership between Hopkins and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. The watershed district bought properties surrounding the park and demolished the buildings. The city is …

Council Selects Site For Oakes Park Lift Station

The sewer facility will be in the northwest corner of the park.

The controversial Oakes Park lift station is set to be built in the northwest corner of the park—closer to nearby homes but away from valuable park space. The City Council made the decision Tuesday night following meetings with Oakes Park neighbors and Park Board review. The lift station is part of a complicated trade in which the Met Council gives Hopkins additional property for Cottageville Park in exchange for the Oakes Park property. At a March council meeting, neighbors fought back against the project. But City Council members voted unanimously to approve a lift station agreement. The northwest corner of the park was the most popular location among the three options shown to residents, although only about 40 people attended the …

Cottageville Park Planning Moves Forward

Designers detailed the next steps for the expanded park.

Passers-by may have not seen any physical transformations to Cottageville Park since workers demolished buildings on newly expanded parkland. Yet planning is proceeding apace behind the scenes—with designers touring the site and reviewing community recommendations. “That is a huge leg up for us—a great start for us,” said Bruce Jacobson—director of landscape architecture at Cuningham Group, the company overseeing park design. Johnson detailed the design team’s work so far and the process ahead during a special meeting Tuesday at nearby Creekwood Estates. That process will not be a simple one. About an acre of the now-three-acre park will need to be set aside for stormwater improvement in order to meet the water quality goals of the …

Hopkins Approves Contract for Cottageville Park Consultant

The consultant will oversee the process of creating a master park plan.

A $40,000 contract to oversee the Cottageville Park planning process should kick start the next phase of renovations for the once unsightly green space.    The City Council on Tuesday approved an agreement for Minneapolis-based Cuningham Group to help the city create a master plan that aims to transform Cottageville Park into a centerpiece of the Blake Road Corridor. Cuningham will focus on three main areas: The process should be finished by November. When it’s done, the city will have a planning report that includes a map, a detailed site plan, detailed cost estimates and an operations and maintenance plan. That plan will, in turn, assist the city in pursuing grant money. “This is a very large project, and it has so many different …

I agree with Norman, a new name would be great. Cottageville has no meaning or punch to it. Could this be a town contest?   more ›

Critics Continue Fight As Oakes Park Lift Station Advances

The Met Council is hosting a meeting Wednesday to discuss the wastewater pumping station’s design, but dedicated opponents are still working to kill the project.

Metropolitan Council members will be seeking input on the design of an Oakes Park lift station Wednesday, but some Hopkins residents continue to fight a sewer project that appears to be all but a done deal.  “I think the City Council made it clear that they don’t care how we the residents feel,” said C. Braun. Braun and 2011 mayoral candidate Garold Healy estimate they’ve hung about 100 flyers asking residents around the park to speak out against the decision to put a lift station, or wastewater pumping station, in Oakes Park. They’ve also continued asking people to sign a petition against the project. The lift station is part of a complicated trade in which the Met Council gives Hopkins additional property for Cottageville Park in …

Met Council Plans May 30 Neighborhood Meeting for Lift Station Project

The meeting will offer residents a chance to learn about the Oakes Park project and provide their input.

The Metropolitan Council invites residents to a neighborhood meeting May 30 to learn about a lift station planned for Oakes Park.  The lift station, or wastewater pumping station, is part of a complicated trade in which the Met Council gives Hopkins additional property for Cottageville Park in exchange for the Oakes Park property. The meeting will offer an opportunity to: The meeting takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 43 Hoops Basketball Academy (1002 Second St. N.E.). Hopkins planners have high hopes for the Oakes Park lift station project, but residents around the park haven’t been as receptive to the idea—arguing in March that the Cottageville expansion was coming at their expense.   Stay up to date on all your local news. Oakes Park Lift Station Plan Angers Neighbors

The lift station is part of a land swap with the Met Council that will expand Cottageville Park.

Residents around Oakes Park are fighting back against a plan to build a sewage lift station in the park as part of a complicated trade-off that would expand Cottageville Park—an improvement that Oakes Park residents say would come at their expense. “This is my home. I face the park. I face directly where this will be. I don’t want it. I oppose it, and I’m also very angry,” a Kassie Court resident said, handing over a petition with 122 signatures opposing the project. The dispute arose at Tuesday’s City Council meeting when members considered an agreement with the Metropolitan Council to build a lift station needed to replace the aging facility currently located near Cottageville Park. The city sees the Met Council's need as an opportunity …
