The Fifth District Report

Are Republicans Wasting Time on Obamacare Votes?

Rep. Keith Ellison said Republicans are neglecting other problems by convening numerous votes on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

On Thursday, 5th District Rep. Keith Ellison cast his 37th vote (depending on how you count) against a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The legislation has no chance of passing since the Senate will likely ignore it and President Barack Obama has promised to veto it on the off chance it ever reached his desk. Republicans defend the frequent votes by saying they want new legislators to be able to uphold their promise to constituents to try and repeal health care reform, but Democrats accuse Republicans of wasting time for political gain. Ellison released the following statement after Thursday’s vote:  Today, for the 37th time in two years, I voted against a partisan attempt by Republicans in Congress to …

Simon Says Felons Likely Won’t Be Voting Anytime Soon

He said the governor’s insistence on bipartisan support for any election laws would kill a proposal to let felons vote before they’ve finished serving their sentences.

Rep. Steve Simon (DFL-District 46) doesn’t see much future over the next two years for a proposal to let some felons vote before they've finished serving their sentences. During a Monday interview on Minnesota Public Radio’s Daily Circuit, he gave the proposal between a zero and 5 percent chance of passage. Simon, whose district includes Hopkins and St. Louis Park, noted that Gov. Mark Dayton has said bills covering election processes and procedures must have support from DFLers and Republicans for him to sign the proposals into law. “I don’t know of a single Republican—not one—that would support this,” said Simon, who’s chairman of the House’s Elections Committee. “So I say to the advocates: ‘I’m glad that they’re providing awareness for …

The reason the vote is not restored until after probation is served is because many do not make it through their probation before offending again. If you serve your full sentence, including probation, then and only then, should your rite be restored.   more ›

Redistricting Postcards in the Mail

The cards show new polling places and district information.

Editor’s Note: The following announcement comes from Hennepin County.   As a result of the recent redistricting process throughout Minnesota, registered voters in Hennepin County are currently being mailed cards indicating their new polling places and district information for all elected offices. Minnesota law requires that congressional, legislative, county and some local district boundaries be redrawn every 10 years following each census. The current redistricting was based on 2010 census data. Using that data, the redistricting process ensures that districts from which officials are elected are essentially equal in population. Because of redistricting: The special postcards are being sent to all registered voters (approximately 700,…

Blake Road

How Much Did the Cottageville Park Demolition Cost?

City Council candidate James Beauchene's comments provoke questions about the project's cost in forgone revenue.

City Council candidate James Beauchene is unique in his opposition to demolition of five buildings on four properties around Cottageville Park. While city officials trumpet the demolition as a triumph for Blake Road, Beauchene says Hopkins shouldn’t erode the city’s tax base to make way for parkland. It’s an argument he made at candidate forums and in an interview with Patch. So how much has the demolition cost Hopkins? It’s important to note from the get-go that the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, not the city, owns the property and oversaw the demolition. The watershed district is a local government entity and, therefore, already exempt from paying property taxes. Even if the buildings continued to stand, the city wouldn’t receive …
