Coffey Plays in McDonald’s All-American Game

The Hopkins star’s team lost 92-64.

Hopkins basketball star Nia Coffey put up two points and snagged six rebounds in Wednesday’s McDonald’s All-American Game, the Chicago Tribune reported. Coffey played on the East team, which lost 92-64. The McDonald’s All-American game is a prestigious tournament for rising stars. Coffey was among more than 800 high school seniors from 39 states and the District of Columbia who were nominated for the 2013 McDonald’s All American Boys and Girls Games. Just 24 girls and 24 boys were selected for the final roster. Coffey and Braham High School’s Rebekah Dahlman were just the ninth and 10th Minnesotans to be named McDonald's All-Americans. Hopkins Synchronized Swimming Places Sixth at State

The Royals placed second in the long routine competition. Laura Morine won all-state honors.

Hopkins High School’s synchronized swimming team finished off the season by placing sixth at last week’s state championship—one better than 2011’s seventh-place finish. The Royals finished second in the long routine portion of the competition. Elissa Marble, Halley Harris and Claire Marti finished sixth in the short trio competition, qualifying to move up to the long routines next year. Sarah Bonoff, Laura Morine and Michelle Olson placed fourth in the long trio routine. Morine also was named to the All-State Synchronized Swimming team. She placed fourth for her extended solo routine and won fourth- and fifth-place medals for long figures and extended figures, respectively. Hopkins Player Chosen for Volleyball Guide Cover

Breakdown Sports has named Sam Seliger-Swenson the top sophomore in the state.

Hopkins volleyball player Sam Seliger-Swenson has been selected as one of 25 players to appear on the cover of Breakdown Sports USA’s 2012 volleyball guidebook. The company selected top athletes for the cover of its annual guide, seen by more than 2,000 people across the county. Breakdown Sports has named Seliger-Swenson the top sophomore in the state. The volleyball guidebook will be available in mid May for head coaches, college advertisers and players. The general public will be able to buy the remainder in late August. Details on how to purchase it will be posted on the Breakdown Sports website later. Two Hopkins Players Chosen for All-Star Football Game

Tavaughn Blair and Brett Bremer will take the field June 30 at TCF Bank Stadium.

The Minnesota Football Coaches Association announced Wednesday that two Hopkins athletes will play in the 2012 All-Star Football Game. Defensive back Tavaughn Blair and defensive tackle Brett Bremer will be playing on the South team. The All-Star Football Game showcases outstanding senior players from the 2011 high school football season. Blair and Bremer will first join the other players for an All-Star training camp that takes place June 24 through June 30 at St. John’s University in Collegeville. The game itself takes place June 30 at TCF Bank Stadium. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m. The game will be the 39th in the current series and the 50th overall.   Stay up to date on all your local news. New Hopkins Soccer Coach Looks to Rebuild Program

Justin Hegre is a Hopkins High School alumnus with deep roots in the local soccer community, so it was only appropriate when Hopkins High School announced in March that it had hired Hegre as the boys soccer head coach. Hopkins’ Chambers Named Mr. Basketball

The award recognizes Hopkins guard Siyani Chambers as the best high school boys basketball senior in the state.

Hopkins guard Siyani Chambers is this year’s Mr. Basketball, 1500 ESPN Twin Cities announced Wednesday afternoon. Minnesota Mr. Basketball recognizes the best high school boys basketball senior in the state, and Chambers certainly fills that bill. He has three state tournaments under his belt and has been a powerhouse on the court over the years. In the Royals’ upset loss in the state tournament semifinals, Chambers scored a game-high 31 points, including a last-second three-pointer. The day before, he set a tournament record, making 22 of 24 free throws, according to the Minnesota State High School League.  He was also named a member of the Star Tribune’s All-Metro first team and the AP All-State team. Osseo Upsets Hopkins in Boys Basketball Semifinal

The Royals lost 86-87 in triple overtime.

No. 1-seeded Hopkins lost a heartbreaking triple overtime match 86-87 against Osseo in Thursday’s state basketball tournament semifinal. Hopkins guard Siyani Chambers—an all-metro first team nominee and Mr. Basketball finalist—scored a game-high 31 points. But the effort wasn’t enough to secure a win in a match that saw miraculous shots from all sides. Osseo guard Bridge Tusler tied it up at the end of regulation with a layup that left the score 64-64. The teams didn’t add any points to the scoreboard during the first overtime. Osseo appeared set to win it at the end of second overtime, but Hopkins guard Jacob Wright hit a dramatic three-pointer to tie the game as the clock expired.
