Following Fatal Robbery, Teacher Recalls Good Kid Prone to Bad Choices

Alice Smith’s Brian Cosgriff started teaching Melvin D. Fletcher Jr. when the boy was 5 years old. St. Paul police shot Fletcher after they say he tried to rob a Kowalski’s.

Brian Cosgriff got to know Melvin D. Fletcher Jr. well over the years. Cosgriff—the Alice Smith physical education teacher and head girls’ basketball coach—started teaching Fletcher when the boy was five. Later, Fletcher and his older brother, Mandel Perkins, lived with Cosgriff periodically when things got hard. “He was a very low-key, easygoing guy—friendly, handsome athletic, mischievous—but never did I think he would hurt anybody,” Cosgriff said. “From the bottom of my heart, I know he was a good kid. I mean, I left my daughter with him.” But on Monday, police say Fletcher robbed the Grand Avenue Kowalski's Markets in St. Paul, armed with a gun. Man Fatally Shot in St. Paul Robbery Grew Up in Hopkins

The man fatally shot Monday during the robbery of a St. Paul Kowalski’s grew up in Hopkins, according to press reports. St. Paul police shot 20-year-old Melvin D. Fletcher Jr. as he tried to flee the Grand Avenue Kowalski's Markets. The Pioneer Press reported that Fletcher grew up in Hopkins. He had previously been convicted of robbing a bank when he was 16—a crime he reportedly committed with former Hopkins High School basketball star Anthony DiLoreto. Hopkins police report that they also had a number of calls involving Fletcher. School District spokeswoman Jolene Goldade said he attended Alice Smith as an elementary schoole and left Hopkins Public Schools in 2008 as a sophomore. Lunds on Hopkins Border Robbed at Gunpoint

No one was hurt in the incident. The suspect left the scene in an unknown direction.

Just before midnight Tuesday, Minnetonka Police officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Lunds grocery store located at 11400 Hwy 7. An employee at the store said a man wearing a mask entered the store at 11:40 p.m. The man displayed a handgun and demanded money. An undisclosed amount of money was taken. The man left the store on foot in an unknown direction. No one was hurt during the robbery. PHOTOS: Police Searching for Information on Walgreens Robbery

A man stole an undisclosed amount of cash after displaying a handgun.

Investigators are looking for information about a robbery involving a gun at the Blake Road Walgreens over the weekend, police announced Tuesday afternoon. A man entered the business at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, displayed a handgun and demanded money, according to a Police Department news release. The man then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. An employee of the store was slightly hurt during the robbery. Police declined to say how the injury happened. Police are also withholding specific details about the handgun for investigation purposes. The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, about 5 feet, 9 inches or 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. He wore a dark blue-jean-style jacket, a black hat, black shoes and jeans. Hopkins Police Investigating Robbery at Gunpoint

The robbery happened last week near the intersection of Ninth Avenue South and Westbrooke Way.

Hopkins police are investigating a robbery at gunpoint that took place last week in the southern part of the city. A Blaine man first reported the robbery to police at 4:48 a.m. July 3. However, he went home and officers advised him to return to make a report and issue a statement, according to police records. He later told officers that he and another man had been robbed by multiple suspects using a handgun, Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg said. The robbery took place late on the night of July 2 near the intersection of Ninth Avenue South and Westbrooke Way. Glassberg said investigators are not ready to release a description of the suspects. Blake Road Robber Receives 67 months

The homeless man who robbed the Blake Road Walgreens received a 67-month prison sentence Wednesday for a spree in which he hit three Walgreens between Nov. 18 and Nov. 23, according to Minnesota court records. Vincent Mark Smith, 26, received the following sentences: All the sentences are to be served concurrently. Smith will receive credit for 173 days served. Smith robbed the Hopkins Walgreens by walking into the store with a BB gun and demanding Percocet and Xanax. Minnetonka Man Accused of Stealing Hance Hardware Bank Deposit

Edgar Solorio-Vasquez, 18, has been charged with simple robbery.

Prosecutors accuse a Minnetonka man of snatching a deposit bag from a Hance Hardware employee as she was dropping off the bag Dec. 2 at nearby U.S. Bank, according to charges filed Friday. The unidentified store employee told police a man approached her at 8:03 p.m. while she was headed to the bank’s night deposit box, Detective Raymond Laudenbach wrote in the criminal complaint. The man was wearing a dark, partially zipped hooded sweatshirt, a T-shirt with neon designs on it and a pink or purple bandana over his face, Laudenbach wrote. The employee said the man tried to grab the bag. The woman initially resisted but let go when the man said, “Give me the money.” The bag had $850 in cash and $2,200 in checks.
