Help ResourceWest Win Free Advertising

Patch has given the nonprofit a month of free advertising. We’ll add another month if 350 more people sign up for our free e-mail newsletter.

Here at Hopkins Patch, we’re big fans of ResourceWest. It does great work in the community amid increasing demands for services. That’s why Hopkins Patch is giving ResourceWest a free advertising spot for one month, starting today. As you read articles on the site, you’ll see the organization’s ad rotate in among our other advertisers. But the well-deserved attention for ResourceWest doesn’t have to end after a month. Patch will give the organization another month of free advertising if 350 more people sign up for Hopkins Patch’s e-mail newsletter by July 13. The daily Hopkins Patch newsletter brings you all the latest happenings in your community. You’ll find news articles, announcements, events and posts from our Local Voices columnists…

(PHOTOS) Alice Smith Murals Blend Similarities and Differences

The murals spread the word about ResourceWest.

The Alice Smith students began the mural by tracing their outlines on the canvas. They traced one another until those outlines came to overlap—hand over foot, leg over arm. The 21 students participating in the project couldn’t be a bigger part of the art they created. “It kind of became a puzzle of kids,” said art teacher Jennifer Silus. The murals are part of a project to get the word out about Hopkins nonprofit ResourceWest. The students painted two murals that they finished Thursday. The murals will hang in Ridgedale Center April through December. At the end, one mural will go to ResourceWest. The other will return to Alice Smith. The ResourceWest mural depicts the organization’s programs—coats and scarves for Winter Warm Wear, …

Making Christmas Merry for More Than 1,000 Local Children

The Toy Chest Drive provides presents to families in need with help from community volunteers and donations. With more than 25 drop sites in more than seven cities across the Hopkins and Minnetonka area, ResourceWest makes it easy to give back this holida

A local family resource center is making it possible for more than 1,000 kids in the area to have a Merry Christmas this season. ResourceWest, the Hopkins Minnetonka Family Resource Center, hosts the Toy Chest Drive, a seasonal program that has provided presents for families in need for 18 years. “I want my kids to have something to unwrap under the tree,” said Amanda, a mother of three elementary-age children from Hopkins. Amanda is one of the many parents who signed up for the program this year due to financial difficulty. While in the process of moving, Amanda said her storage unit flooded and all of their belongings were ruined. “We have to start over completely,” she said. “Everything we accumulated for years on end is just destroyed…

Your Community Needs You!

A group of local faith communities are hosting a two-day volunteer event this weekend.

Area faith communities are looking for 700 volunteers to join-in this year's Community Days of Service event, scheduled to take place tomorrow and Sunday. Community Days of Service is an annual event, organized and led by local faith communities, to help area schools, city parks and charitable community organizations in Minnetonka, Hopkins and St. Louis Park. Minnetonka’s Marie Levitus is one of the volunteers who will represent Bet Shalom Congregation. (VIDEO) Hopkins Fills Empty Bowls

The annual fundraiser brought in a record amount of money to help the needy.

Tuesday’s Empty Bowls fundraiser showed the community’s artistic side. It also showed that the community can cook. And it showed that the community knows how to have a good time. But most of all, it showed that the community takes care of its most vulnerable. Organizers set a goal of raising $60,000 to fight hunger this year. Last year's event raised $67,000.  In the end, the 2011 Empty Bowls event surpassed both those totals, setting a new record of close to $90,000. The 13th-annual event at the Hopkins Center for the Arts raised money for ResourceWest and ICA Food Shelf. Attendees made a free will donation; chose their favorite bowl from among 1,000 created by local artists, students and volunteers; enjoyed a bowl of soup and bread and …
