With less than a month to go before the economy teeters over the edge of that "fiscal cliff"—a term used to describe the quandry the U.S. government faces at the end of 2012, when the terms of the Budget Control Act of 2011 will go into effect—the White House offered up a deal last week estimated to produce $1.2 trillion in new tax revenue and make $400 billion in entitlement cuts to programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security over the next decade. President Barack Obama is apparently a supporter of expanded light rail in the Twin Cities area. The Obama Administration announced today that the Southwest Light Rail project is one of two projects in the country that will be expedited due to the "We Can't Wait" initiative. That initiative aims to speed up the various processes required to get a big project off the ground. In the case of Southwest LRT, the Federal Transit Administration is using an enhanced coordination process with other federal agencies as well as exploring using the NEPA/Clean Water Act merger process, which is estimated to save several months by aligning multiple permit and review processes to work concurrently instead of sequentially. Following the deaths of four Americans killed in attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya last Tuesday, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) appeared as part of a roundtable on NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday morning to discuss the ongoing events in the Middle East and their impact on U.S. foreign policy. President Barack Obama greeted an enthusiastic crowd on Friday at Honeywell in Golden Valley while on a quick trip through the Twin Cities. The crowd of at least 200 arrived with smiles and cameras in hand. The audience, which was mostly made up of Honeywell employees, waited for the President to speak from the floor they work on every day. "It's not often you get to see the president at work," Rich Pearson, a Honeywell employee from Vadnais Heights, said with a chuckle. "There has been a lot of excitement about his arrival all week.
