Hopkins Seniors Win Triple ‘A’ Award

The award recognizes students who have high achievements in the arts, academics and athletics.

  Editor’s Note: The following announcement comes from Hopkins Public Schools.   Maddie Hinck and Reed Fischer, Hopkins High School seniors, have been named the 2013 recipients of the Triple "A" Award for their achievements in the arts, academics and athletics. They will now advance to the sectional level and, if chosen there, to the state level where the winners receive a $4,000 scholarship. Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple "A" Award) is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a "B" or better grade point average and who participate in League-sponsored athletic and fine arts activities. Hopkins Swimmers to Compete in State Meet

Two Hopkins High School athletes will compete with the best high school swimmers in the state at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center this weekend.

This weekend, countless hard practices, unwavering dedication and the perfect taper will pay off when girls compete in the Minnesota State High School League Girls Swimming and Diving State Tournament. Beginning Friday, swimmers from Hopkins High School will take to the water with the best high school swimmers in the state. Last year, Hopkins High School came in 20th at the girls state meet. This year, here's who you can root for: *** Want to cheer on the athletes? Class 2AA swimming prelims start at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16. Finals start at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. The event is at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center and tickets are $8.

West Metro Football Roundup

Edina, Washburn, St. Michael and Maple Grove Get Wins in Instant Classics

In other West Metro football action, Eden Prairie handed Hopkins its first loss and Bridge Tusler keeps it rolling for Osseo High.

The Edina Hornets stepped up in a big way Friday night, using a little bit of extra time to defeat the Minnetonka Skippers in an instant classic in Lake Conference action.  Mark Handberg hit Marley Allison in overtime for an 11-yard touchdown to give the No. 10 Hornets an upset at home over Minnetonka, the fifth-ranked team in Class 6A. The Skippers outgained the Hornets 331 to 237, but Edina reeled off the game's last 14 points, with a Handberg pass to Eric Veker forcing overtime. Patch Prep Football West Metro Roundup: Crimson, Wayzata Week One Winners

Each week we'll take a quick trip around the West Metro from a football roundup. Here's a look at the games from Thursday night in Week One.

There were some tight-knit games and a couple of blowouts in Week One of the Minnesota High School League football season, but no huge upsets to rock the prep sports world in Thursday night's heat.  Maple Grove, Wayzata and Osseo were all big winners in the new Class 6A, with St. Michael-Albertville falling to Cambridge-Isanti in a mild upset over the Mississippi 8.  Here's a look around the West Metro.  Wayzata 52, Bloomington Jefferson 7 Team Purple looks like it's ready to make another run to the Mall of America turf, dominating from the start of its opening night matchup at home versus Bloomington Jefferson.  Tanner Bedard carried the ball for two touchdowns, and Reid Pettersen had two more from his QB spot, as Wayzata led 35-0 at the …

Blake School Wins Fourth Challenge Cup

The Minnesota State High School League award recognizes success in fine arts and athletics tournaments.

The Blake School has won the Class AA Minnesota State High School League Challenge Cup for the fourth time in seven years, according to a news release from the school. The cup recognizes schools’ success in fine arts and athletics tournaments—with points awarded based on performance in section and state tournaments that take place during the yearlong competition. Eden Prairie won this year’s Class AAA Challenge Cup and Dawson-Boyd won the Class A cup. The Blake School tallied 521 Challenge Cup points—with wins in the girls lacrosse, tennis and soccer tournament.
