Survey Finds Broad Support for Transit, Southwest LRT

Metro chambers commissioned the study to find out voters’ opinions about public transportation.

Support for the Southwest Light Rail Transit project has grown significantly over the past year and a majority of Minnesotans support a sales tax increase for transit, according to survey results announced Thursday. The memo that the bipartisan survey team produced on behalf of the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce, St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce paints a picture of widespread support for transit in both the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. “Minnesotans understand that planning for economic growth and improving our region’s transportation system is just common sense,” a news release quoted Minneapolis Regional Chamber President Todd Klingel. “This survey shows there is strong support for …

OPINION: Chambers’ Light Rail Goals Remain the Same After Election

The chambers promised to work with new and returning legislators to see the Southwest LRT project through.

  Editor’s Note: In the lead-up to the 2012 election, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce, Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce, Edina Chamber of Commerce, Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and TwinWest Chamber of Commerce talked with candidates and voters about the need for the Southwest Light Rail Transit project. The election brought in numerous legislators who support the project and transferred control to the DFL, which has historically been more supporting of light rail than their Republican opponents. Chambers Launch ‘More Jobs Less Traffic’ Campaign to Promote LRT

Thousands of flyers arrived at homes this week encouraging residents to talk with state legislators about the Southwest Light Rail Transit Project.

Southwest Light Rail Transit has seen mixed success over the past year. Neither the state Legislature nor Department of Employment and Economic Development deemed the project worthy of a $14 million request—although Dayton eventually threw $2 million to keep LRT moving forward. Now organizers are taking the fight directly to the people. TwinWest, the Edina Chamber of Commerce, the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce have rebranded the Southwest Transit Alliance as “More Jobs Less Traffic.” The alliance reworked its website and mailed thousands of flyers to residents in legislative districts along the line that started arriving this week.
