Following a fourth-place finish Thursday, the Royelles are in second place as they prepare for the final Lake Conference meet of the season. The Hopkins High School dance team finished fourth at the Edina kick meet. That leaves them with a total of 18 points for the season, behind only Wayzata’s 25 points. Hopkins is second among the five schools in the conference for kick meets. The final conference competition will be a jazz meet, in which it also sits in second place. That meet takes place Jan. 17 at Hopkins. The Royelles have at least three more meets after conference competition ends, including the 2AAA section meet Feb. 2. …

The new Lake Conference will be intriguing with the addition of defending state champion Eden Prairie. Patch fills you in on what you need to know for the 2011 season.
The Lake Conference has an all new feel to it this season, and from a baseball perspective that should mean quality games all spring. After conference re-alignment last summer, the Classic Lake Conference lost Robbinsdale Armstrong to the Northwest Suburban Conference and added Eden Prairie to form the new Lake Conference. The Eagles will join Wayzata, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Edina this spring. “It’s one of the toughest conferences in the state,” Edina coach Mike Olson said. “You add Eden Prairie and it just becomes an unbelievable conference from top to bottom.” So what does that mean for you baseball fans? Richfield 7-2, lost to Holy Angels 6-5 With almost all its letterwinners returning for another season, many coaches in the conference are looking for the Hopkins baseball team to top the new-look Lake Conference. Royals coach Neil Lerner said the competition will only get tougher with the addition of defending state champion Eden Prairie. “We’re really optimistic about the year,” Lerner said. “Add a team like Eden Prairie in the conference and it gets tough, but we’re optimistic.” Key losses Pitcher Kendrick Paulsen led the team in appearances last season, and he now plays for St. Olaf College in Northfield. Both the boys and girls varsity teams finished in the middle of the pack of the 5K freestyle race at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington.
Kevin Kos, co-head coach of the Hopkins Nordic ski teams, knew Wednesday's Lake Conference 5K freestyle meet was going to be hard for his teams. "This is a brutal conference," he said of the five-team conference that includes Hopkins, Minnetonka, Edina, Wayzata and Eden Prairie. On top of that, Wednesday's course, at Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington "is one of the toughest around." Despite those daunting circumstances, Kos was very happy afterward. "I'm ecstatic with many of their results," he said. Both the Royals' boys and girls varsity teams finished third in the team standings.
