Man Confesses To Hopkins, Edina Burglaries After DNA Test

A 20-year-old man faces a burglary charge in connection with an incident thought to be part of a rash of thefts over the summer.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article misstated why Minneapolis police initially arrested Quinndarius Marquinn Jackson. The initial arrest was for an Edina Police Department charge of financial transaction card fraud. The victim in that case lives in the same area as the other victims.    DNA testing results have led to a burglary charge against the suspect in a rash of Edina and Hopkins burglaries over the summer. Prosecutors charged 20-year-old Quinndarius Marquinn Jackson with first-degree burglary Oct. 12, according to a criminal complaint signed by Edina Police Detective David Carlson. Officers responding to a home burglary on July 19 found a two-inch-by-three-inch piece of fabric on the deck of the Adams Avenue home. The …

Controversial Day Care Center Resurrected on Blake Road

Family Resources & Child Care Center plans a facility next to the Hopkins Arbie’s after abandoning plans for one near the Interlachen neighborhood.

A St. Paul company is trying again to start a Hopkins day care after a representative slammed the community’s business climate four months ago in the face of neighbor opposition and a traffic study that prompted them to back off their initial plan. Hopkins’ Zoning and Planning Commission on Tuesday recommended that the City Council grant a conditional use permit to Family Resources & Child Care Center for a facility at 126 Blake Road N. The company plans a four-classroom day care that will serve up to 62 children. Family Resources initially tried to start an extended-hours day care facility at Excelsior and Blake. The Excelsior Boulevard property is already zoned for business, and day cares are allowed there with a conditional use permit. …

Police ID Interlachen, Presidential Neighborhood Burglary Suspect

Quinndarius Marquinn Jackson was arrested Friday on an unrelated charge and released from jail Monday.

Police have announced a suspect in a rash of burglaries in Interlachen and the Presidential neighborhood. Minneapolis police on Friday arrested 19-year-old Quinndarius Marquinn Jackson on an unrelated charge of financial transaction card fraud. Edina Police Sgt. Brian Tholen said officers from that department spoke with Jackson—who had been their suspect all along—and were able to get him to admit to being involved in Edina burglaries. Hopkins Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg said Jackson is also a suspect in some recent Hopkins burglaries. Police interviewed him but Jackson declined to talk to Hopkins police, Glassberg said. Jackson was released Monday on $1,000 bail. Thieves have entered several garages and homes through unlocked doors and …

Edina, Hopkins Police Have Suspect in Two-City Crime Spree

No arrest has been made, but police believe a 20-year-old Hopkins man is responsible for the recent surge of burglaries and thefts from vehicles.

Police with multiple agencies are on the hunt for a Hopkins man they believe is responsible for a massive number of burglaries and thefts from vehicles in both Edina and Hopkins. Edina Police Det. Dave Carlson said a 20-year-old Hopkins man is likely responsible for at least 25 incidents in Edina since early June, in addition to a number of similar crimes in Hopkins. Carlson said the suspect is black, approximately 5'7" and 158 lbs., with cornrows in the back of his hair. He typically rides around on a 10-speed bicycle with the handlebars turned the wrong way. Police believe the suspect rides his bike south on Blake Road from Hopkins, then takes the path behind The Blake School to slip into the neighborhoods silently. "The good news is I …

Owners Withdraw Excelsior Boulevard Day Care Application

Family Resources and Child Care Center will not build the controversial center because of traffic study costs and angry neighbors.

Clarification: An earlier version of this article referred to allegations from "planners" that a traffic study was used as a pretext to kill the project. "Planners" in that instance referred to those launching the day care project, not city planners. We regret the confusion and have changed the sentence to convey that more clearly.   Family Resources and Child Care Center has withdrawn its application to build a controversial day care center at Excelsior and Blake—citing a traffic study and neighborhood opposition that the day care says used the study as a pretext to kill the project. The decision stems from a July 10 City Council decision to require a traffic study in order for the extended-hours day car project to move forward. …

I disagree with Ms. Sampong’s characterization of the neighborhood concerns at the July 10th Hopkins City Council meeting. I was in attendance, and am a friend/neighbor to all who spoke at the meeting. I’m frankly offended by her comments. Her opinion that the requirement of a traffic study was a ploy to kill the project is simply false. A review of the Hopkins City Council archives shows that …   more ›

Traffic Study May Kill Controversial Excelsior Boulevard Day Care

The owners said the day care would provide a necessary service. Interlachen residents questioned whether it was the right fit for the area.

UPDATED 2:58 p.m. July 11: The property owners now say they are waiting to decide whether to go through with the traffic study.   Interlachen neighbors worried about noise from a proposed extended-hour day care at Excelsior and Blake. They worried about vehicles driving in and out. They worried about parking. But in the end, it may be the cost of a traffic study that kills the project. Family Resources and Child Care Center had applied for a conditional use permit to operate a 46-child day care at 8383 Excelsior Blvd., the site of an old interior design studio. Unlike a traditional day care, this one was to be open from 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week in order to accommodate parents working untraditional hours. Frances Davis and …

Police Respond to Burglaries in Interlachen Neighborhood

The thieves broke into vehicles and garages at three locations.

Hopkins Police are investigating burglaries of vehicles and garages that happened Wednesday night in the Interlachen neighborhood. Thieves went through garages at three homes—one on Oakwood Road, one on Ashley Road and one on Boyce Street, Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg said. At least two of the garages were attached garages. The thieves also broke into multiple vehicles during the spree. Because the investigation is ongoing, Glassberg declined to specify the exact items that were stolen, saying only that the thieves took electronics. He urged residents to lock their garages and remove valuables from their vehicles, even when the vehicles are parked in a garage. Below are further tips Glassberg shared for deterring so-called “car prowlers…
