Prosecutors allege counts of second-degree and attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Prosecutors are charging a Minneapolis man with sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl in Hopkins. Abdinasir Alasow Mohamed, 36, appeared in court Monday on one count of second-degree and another of attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct. According to court documents, the girl approached Hopkins Police a week ago to report a sexual assault that allegedly occurred at a Hopkins home two to three days earlier. The girl told police Mohamed touched her, rubbed himself against her and later tried to force himself upon her. She also told police she was able to get away from Mohamed and run to another room in the house, where she reported what happened to someone else. Patch has chosen to not disclose the girl's name. Deployments, training, medical absences will take five officers off duty through July.
Hopkins Police officer Mike Johnson is also a senior airman serving as a medic at Camp Leatherneck/Camp Bastion in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. “I’m learning a lot here, and it’s been a good experience. But I miss Hopkins and the guys at the department,” Johnson said during a phone interview from Afghanistan. Hopkins officers have deployed through the military before, but this time Johnson and two others will be on active duty at once. At the same time, the department is down two more officers because of essential training and medical causes. In all, an unprecedented one-fifth of the department’s 26-officer force will be gone through the summer. Routine sick time, vacation and other training could further stretch the department. “By mid…

The department raised the fourth largest amount of money for Special Olympics among 47 law enforcement agencies.
In terms of size, the Hopkins Police Department can’t hold a candle to the police forces of much larger communities in the state. But when it comes to raising money for a good cause, Hopkins is right up there with departments such as Minneapolis, Bloomington and Eden Prairie. The $5,719 that Hopkins raised for Special Olympics this year was the fourth largest amount among the 47 law enforcement agencies that participated in last month’s Polar Plunge. Even more surprising, this was Hopkins’ first year participating with Special Olympics fundraising. The city took the opportunity Tuesday night to recognize this accomplishment and to present a ceremonial check to Special Olympics.

'Sectors' help police better learn their neighborhoods and work with the community to address potential problems.
It’s the middle of the afternoon and Sgt. Michael Glassberg is at an apartment complex in north Hopkins. The main office is busy, but the employee recognizes Glassberg and waves him on to the manager’s upstairs office. Glassberg enters the office and spends a few brief moments discussing how things are going. Glassberg is no stranger to this complex, but this familiarity doesn’t come just from responding to emergency calls. As he does with other businesses in his area—called a sector—Glassberg regularly visits with this manager as part of his strategy for the neighborhood and police to solve problems together. Police Chief Mike Reynolds brought the concept of sectors to Hopkins when he arrived last year. In August, he divided the city into…

The officers sought medical treatment but weren't hospitalized.
Two Hopkins police officers were slightly hurt Monday morning after an unlicensed driver rear-ended their squad car. The officers sought medical treatment but were not hospitalized, said Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg. The department hasn't yet disclosed the officers’ identities. The officers were on a traffic stop near Excelsior Boulevard and Ashley Road when a Toyota pickup hit the squad car, according to a Police Department news release. Frost on the windshield had partially obscured the driver’s view—a violation of state law. Officers ticketed Donis Miguel Angel Valenzuela, 34, of Hopkins, for driving after his license had been revoked and for driving without insurance. Police estimate the crash caused more than $6,000 damage to the …

Members of the Hopkins Police and Police Reserves, along with relatives and friends, participated in the annual Polar Plunge on Saturday at Thomas Beach on Lake Calhoun. Over half a million dollars has been raised for the Special Olympics so far. The Hopkins team raised $5,764.00 to help Special Olympics Minnesota athletes in its first time participating in the event. The team members said the cold that they felt when hitting the water only lasts for a moment but the awareness and support lasts forever.
