Little ones flock to the library’s children’s area each day.
Young ones filled the Hopkins Library’s children’s area Wednesday. In one corner, a boy “cooked” plastic vegetables on a pretend grill. In the center, two boys—one wearing a backwards fireman’s helmet—arranged magnetic gears. Throughout the space, children read books, played with letters and let their imaginations run wild. Wednesday wasn’t exceptional, though. Nearly two years after it was created, the children’s area remains a big draw. Children and their caretakers—moms, dads, grandparents, daycare providers, nannies and more—flock to the space each day for play and learning. “It’s a real magnet,” Senior Librarian Lisa Bjerken said. The children’s area got its start in July 2010 as a pilot project with the Children’s Museum. The idea …

Kristin Kaspar studied history in Augsburg College and was a member of the school’s history club. She works as a software quality assurance analyst, so she considered it fortuitous when a chance encounter led to an offer to write an article on the Hopkins Library’s 100th anniversary. “It’s fate,” she marveled. “They didn’t know me. I didn’t have anything published.” Kaspar, a Hopkins resident, was well suited to delving into the library’s past, though. In addition to a love of writing and history, she grew up in Minnetonka, just on the other side of Shady Oak Road. Her family has deep roots in this area and worked at the businesses that made Hopkins. As the library prepares to celebrate its anniversary Sunday, Hopkins Patch sat down with …

Share your favorite memory, listen to an author’s talk or attend the anniversary open house.
The Hopkins Library invites residents to help celebrate its centennial anniversary by sharing a favorite library memory. The library merged with the Hennepin County Library system in 1973. But it was founded as a city library in 1912 after the Women’s Improvement League convinced officials of what was then called West Minneapolis to start a library in three rooms of the old city hall on Eighth and Excelsior Avenue (now Mainstreet). “The Hopkins’ Library’s centennial celebration is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to learn about the library’s history and to acknowledge its enduring importance to residents today,” a news release quoted Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison. “For 100 years, the Hopkins Library has …
