Police Respond to Burglaries in Interlachen Neighborhood

The thieves broke into vehicles and garages at three locations.

Hopkins Police are investigating burglaries of vehicles and garages that happened Wednesday night in the Interlachen neighborhood. Thieves went through garages at three homes—one on Oakwood Road, one on Ashley Road and one on Boyce Street, Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg said. At least two of the garages were attached garages. The thieves also broke into multiple vehicles during the spree. Because the investigation is ongoing, Glassberg declined to specify the exact items that were stolen, saying only that the thieves took electronics. He urged residents to lock their garages and remove valuables from their vehicles, even when the vehicles are parked in a garage. Below are further tips Glassberg shared for deterring so-called “car prowlers…

Cigarette Butt Left in Car Break-in Leads Investigators to Suspect

Timothy Paul Afanasiev has been charged with misdemeanor theft.

DNA from a cigarette butt left behind during a Hopkins car break-in led police to a man in jail, according to court documents released Wednesday. The case began Oct. 29 when officers went to Meadow Creek Condos in response to a theft, Hopkins Detective Renee Meuwissen wrote in the charging documents. The vehicle owner told police someone broke into her car overnight and stole a $150 stereo, breaking the dashboard and cutting the wires. The victim also found a Marlboro cigarette butt that did not belong to her, which investigators sent in for DNA analysis. The results of that analysis triggered an alert when it matched a profile in the state’s DNA database for 21-year-old Timothy Paul Afanasiev, of Eagan, said Hopkins Police Sgt. Michael …

Man Suspected of Giving Fake Check to Hopkins Landlord

The bank said the check’s design, logo and routing number didn’t match.

Police are looking for a man accused of giving a fake check to a Hopkins landlord, according to charging documents filed Tuesday. Landlord Rod Galvin told police that 29-year-old Edward David Stahlmann gave his son-in-law a $2,400 rent check on April 13 that was later returned as fraudulent, Police Officer Raymond Laudenbach wrote in the charging documents. When Laudenbach talked with the bank, it said the logo and design were inconsistent with the actual design and logo. The routing number on the check also went to a different bank. Stahlmann moved in April 16. Galvin learned about the fake check while he was in Iowa. By the time he returned to Minnesota, Stahlmann had left the property. Police looked for Stahlmann at his parents’ North …
