Former Hopkins Football Star Named Defensive Player of the Year

Marcus Williams, now a North Dakota State University cornerback, helped his team to another FCS Championship.

Former Hopkins standout Marcus Williams, who’s now a North Dakota State University cornerback, has been named the College Sporting News FCS 2012 Defensive Player of the Year, College Sporting News announced last week. Williams helped his team to a 14-1 record in 2012 that culminated in NDSU’s second-consecutive Football Championship Subdivision title. The junior has played in all 29 games of his career, including 27 starts. He also has 11 career interceptions, with three returned for touchdows. Williams was also named as one of six defense backs on the College Sporting News 2012 Fabulous Fifty FCS All-America Team. Tartan Edges Out Hopkins at Tip Off Classic

The Royals lost 88-85 despite a late-game run.

Hopkins fought back to narrow a 13 point deficit at the half but was still edged out by Oakdale’s Tartan High School during Saturday’s Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic. The Royals boys lagged 39-52 at the end of the first period. Although they outscored Tartan in the second 46-36, it wasn’t enough to clinch the victory. In the end, Tartan emerged with a close 88-85 win. Hopkins senior Jamal Davis led the Royals with 24 points—and tied Tartan’s Kharie Kirkland for the game. Junior Jake Wright and Freshman Amir Coffey were No. 2 and 3 for the Roayls with 18 points and 14 points, respectively. Hopkins Boys Prepare for Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic Saturday

Hopkins High School will be among 28 high school basketball teams from around Minnesota and Wisconsin at Minnetonka High School on Saturday for the Ninth Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic. The games feature 14 terrific matchups between the elite in Minnesota boys high school basketball. Games begin at 11 a.m. with a showdown between perennial state contenders Buffalo and Woodbury and conclude later Saturday night with seven total games on each court, all of which feature teams ranked among the top-15 in their respective classes. Girls Tip Off Classic Takes Place Saturday at Lindbergh Center

Hopkins’ girls and boys teams will both play in the ninth annual event.

Hopkins is set to rev up the girls’ basketball season Saturday with the Ninth-Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center. The invitational will have 15 games with teams from Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas. There will be: Start times run from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Hopkins plays Olathe Northwest (KS) at 7:30 p.m. on the Main Court. The Royals boys’ team is also playing in one of the event’s two boys games—a 6 p.m. matchup against Centennial on the Main Court. Hopkins Girls Swim At State

Junior Rae Bullinger led the way with a seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hopkins High School had one swimmer crack the top 10 at the state swimming and diving meet that took place Thursday through Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Junior Rae Bullinger placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.94. The junior also placed 15th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:09.11. Meanwhile, eighth grader Kate Glover placed 21st in the 200-yard freestyle in the preliminaries, finishing with a time of 1:57.07. Glover also placed 21st in prelims for the 500-yard freestyle, coming in at 5:16.00. Hopkins’ 200-yard freestyle relay team—made up of Bullinger, sophomore Kate Segar, junior Andrea Sanabria and Glover—finished 19th in the preliminaries. The four raced to a time …

Three Hopkins Basketball Players Commit on National Signing Day

Nia Coffey, Erin O’Toole and Mikaala Shackelford all committed to play with Division I schools.

Three of Hopkins High School’s top girls basketball players signed to play at the collegiate level on Wednesday. Guard Nia Coffey signed with Northwestern University. Forward Erin O’Toole signed with the University of North Dakota. And Guard Mikaala Shackelford signed with the University of Illinois. The scholarships the three received are worth a combined $100,000 per year. “These are three student athletes that have made our department very, very proud,” said Hopkins Activity Director Dan Johnson. “They’ve made our school proud with their academic prowess. … And athletically, of course, they’ve been a part of a couple state championship teams and multiple conference championship teams and section championship teams. PHOTOS: Hopkins Falls to Edina in Homecoming Game

Despite a 24-14 loss to Edina, Royals fans enjoyed football festivities.

The Royals may have fallen to Edina 24-14, but school spirit remained high in the stands Friday during Hopkins High’s School’s homecoming game. Students kicked off the night with tailgate parties and carried their enthusiasm into the stadium. Cheerleaders, Royelles dancers and the band kept the crowd entertained during breaks in the game. On the field, it went less well. Hopkins’ loss drops its record to 4-2—with an 0-2 record in the Lake Conference.
