Hopkins Education Foundation Awards $42,000 in Grants

The organization has given more than $2 million to Hopkins schools since 1995.

Benjamin Friesen knows that educators have plenty of cool technology to work with. The West Junior High digital content specialist and other teachers regularly use Google apps and other tools. But technology on its own doesn’t ensure better learning. That’s why Friesen is thankful for a $9,600 grant the Hopkins Education Foundation awarded him and fellow technology integration specialist Todd Roudabush. The grant will pay for about 70 teachers from five districts to come together and share their ideas about how to get the most out of the technology, the second part of a get-together called the “Apps Collaboration Hive.” “It’s just primarily a good professional development experience for our staff so they can take that away,” Friesen said…

Helping Paws Donations Soar on Give to the Max Day

The organization was one of the Hopkins nonprofits that raised thousands in donations during the annual fundraiser.

Tails are once again wagging at Helping Paws following another strong performance on Give to the Max Day. The organization had 423 people donate $62,187—a total that made it 18th overall, the highest-earning Hopkins nonprofit. It also won a $1,000 bonus for earning fourth place on the leaderboard for medium nonprofits, which have revenue between $100,000 and $1 million. Its 2012 total is 45 percent greater than the $42,973 it raised in 2011, when it ranked 27th in the state. Helping Paws was followed by Main Street School of Performing Arts and Hopkins Education Foundation—which raised $9,610 and $7,418, respectively. The foundation, which placed 74th among medium nonprofits, was also among the few to win a $1,000 Golden Ticket. Every hour…

What Is HEF and Why Is It Important to School District Taxpayers?

The Hopkins Education Foundation funds projects that help local students.

Editor’s Note: The following guest column comes from Michele Pasko, a member of the Hopkins Education Foundation Board.   You may have noticed that school funding is a contentious issue—as fuel and insurance costs rise, school budgets continue to shrink or remain stagnant. HEF has allowed Hopkins to do something about the problem. HEF is the Hopkins Education Foundation, a non-profit that grants money to projects within the Hopkins School District. HEF grants funds to "best-practice" ideas—both large and small—generated from Hopkins school staff. These ideas excite, motivate, engage and inspire, and are often pilot projects that allow the school district to "try it before we buy it." Small-scale projects can be tested in one classroom or…
