The following public safety summary of information from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Patrol Unit that includes highlights from Feb. 25 to March 3, 2013. In addition to the law enforcement services it provides throughout the county, the HCSO provides primary patrol services for the communities of Hassan Township, Greenfield, Medicine Lake and Fort Snelling, as well as the Hennepin County portions of Hanover and Rockford. The report was provided by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Not all incidents are included in the summary. On Feb. 25, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the future site of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office 911 Emergency Communications Facility in Plymouth. The new facility will ensure uninterrupted service for 911 calls, radio dispatch, and technical services. To begin digging with ceremonial shovels, Sheriff Rich Stanek was joined by Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik, Hennepin County Administrator David Hough, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Carlson, and Hennepin County Commissioners Jan Callison and Linda Higgins Jeff Johnson. Statistics show that violent crime is down in Hennepin County. Tell us what crimes you’re seeing in your community.
According to a recent Hennepin County Sheriff's Office press release, from 2006 and 2012, violent crime in Hennepin County has decreased 37 percent. The FBI says that murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault all make up “violent crime.” The Sheriff’s Office reports that in 2012, the county saw the lowest amount of violent crime in more than two decades. And while violent crimes may be decreasing, Twin Cities residents still see various crimes impact their neighborhoods. In Golden Valley, police recently warned residents about a string of mail thefts. Last January, Minnetonka police alerted homeowners to a rash of burglaries. Business thefts, including an incident that led to a dangerous police chase, have taken place in Eden Prairie. …

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is releasing statistics that provide an estimate of the county’s violent crime in 2012. The statistics show that violent crime has decreased countywide by 37% from 2006 to 2012. 2012 had one of the lowest levels of violent crime countywide in more than two decades. Violent crime is defined as: murder and manslaughter--non negligent, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. The definition is from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Year-to-date, from 2011-2012, there was an estimated 3% increase in violent crime countywide. Despite the slight increase year-to-date, last year’s overall violent crime numbers …

Today, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek joined Minneapolis residents and law enforcement leaders in a roundtable discussion with President Barack Obama to discuss guns and extreme violence. Among the reasons for President Obama’s visit was to highlight why Minneapolis and Hennepin County have sustained overall reductions in violent crime in recent years and to look for solutions to further reduce gun violence. On January 28, Sheriff Stanek and law enforcement leaders met with President Barack Obama at the White House to discuss mental illness and gun violence. Sheriff Stanek was invited to attend the meeting because of his work as president of the Major County Sheriffs’ Association (MCSA). Also in attendance was a group of local police chiefs from cities that have been the scenes of recent mass shootings; Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau and the police chiefs from Newtown (CT) and Aurora (CO). After seven vehicles plowed through the ice on Lake Minnetonka, Sheriff Stanek reminds citizens to be safe.

With warmer temperatures expected this weekend, more people are expected to be using the county’s lakes for recreation. The Sheriff’s Office urges all residents to use caution when using area lakes and other bodies of water. Remember that no ice should ever be considered completely safe. Freezing and thawing have created variable ice conditions. Last weekend, there were seven vehicles broke through ice on Lake Minnetonka. Hennepin County residents are urged to review these safety guidelines: · Anyone using the ice –including people on foot, snowmobiles and ATVs --should use safety precautions such as wearing life jackets.
