Life Jacket Lending on Lake Minnetonka Aimed at Preventing Drownings

Water temperatures on Lake Minnetonka are currently in the 60s, even though air temperatures this week have been in the 70s.

On Lake Minnetonka, there are free life jackets available that boaters may borrow for the day. The program called "Kids Don’t Float" is a partnership between the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Safe Kids Northwest Metro Minneapolis and North Memorial Medical Center. The life jackets are found inside storage containers located at three public boat launch locations: Gray’s Bay, Spring Park Bay and Maxwell Bay. “Life jackets save lives,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, “Putting a life jacket on a child is just as important as putting them in a seatbelt or car seat.” Related Post: Life jackets are especially important during the Memorial Day weekend because of the chilly water conditions. Please notice that stand up paddle boards are considered a "vessel" and also require an accessible Coast guard approved (PFD) life jacket for each person aboard. Same rules for children. They also require a signaling device (whistle) and a flashlight at night. Hennepin County's Top Cop: 'Don't End Your Memorial Day in Jail'

Sheriff Stanek says 87 arrests for boating while intoxicated were made last year in Hennepin County, promises water patrol will have "all boats" on lakes and rivers this Memorial Day.

On Tuesday, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek was at the Water Patrol station in Spring Park saying deputies, state troopers and DNR enforcement agents will be out in full force this Memorial Day. Related posts:

Updated: Free Gun Locks and 'Jaws of Life' Demonstration

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office open house is Friday. Find out when and where you can meet your local deputies.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is holding its annual open house Friday at the patrol headquarters in Brooklyn Park. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9401 83rd Ave. N., Brooklyn Park. There also will be gun locks available "while supplies last," according to a Thursday news release.  “For those who have a firearm in their home, this lock will provide an additional safety measure for storage,” Stanek said in a Thursday news release. “Safely securing and handling a weapon is especially important in households with children or households where children may visit, such as a grandparent’s home.” There will be canine demonstrations and a fingerprinting booth at the event, according to a news release on the Sheriff's Office …

Hennepin County Has A Bunch of New Deputies

Sheriff Rich Stanek presided over the swearing-in ceremony Monday night.

Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek swore in 27 new detention deputies and 30 new deputy sheriffs Monday night, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. Deputy Haissan Hussein was among those who received their badge. "He is the first Somali American to be sworn-in as a deputy sheriff in Hennepin County," according to the news release. “We want Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office personnel to reflect the communities we serve and Deputy Hussein is an asset to public safety and our efforts to work in partnership with the Somali American community in Hennepin County,” Stanek said in the news release. Hennepin County Reminds Residents to Report Suspicious Activity

With the explosions at the Boston Marathon, the Sheriff’s Office is asking people to be vigilant.

  Editor’s Note: The following reminder comes from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.   Today, authorities are investigating explosions at the Boston Marathon that have killed two people and have injured approximately 100 others. According to state, local and national security sources, there are no known threats in Minnesota or Hennepin County. As a reminder, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office urges citizens to be engaged in public safety in our community by reporting suspicious activity.  If you “see something, say something.” Citizens should call 911 or contact local law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Office offers several ways to provide information about suspicious activities or crime tips. You may use one of the following methods:

Hennepin County Drug Dog ‘Grissom’ Retires

He will spend his retirement with his deputy partner as a family pet.

  Editor’s Note: The following announcement comes from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.   Grissom, an HCSO Narcotics K9, has retired after nine years of service to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. His deputy partner will keep him at home and he will spend his retirement as a family pet. He is credited with the seizure of approximately 3,349.32 lbs of marijuana, 28 lbs of methamphetamine, 1.5 lbs of heroin, 127 lbs of cocaine, 4.1 lbs of crack cocaine, 209 grams of mushrooms, 135.5 grams of hash, and 1,839 tabs of ecstasy, as well as $2,249,700 in US currency. Water Safety Tips for Those Heading Out on Spring Break

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office reminds children and families to be careful in and on the water.

Spring Break from area schools means additional free time for many children and families.  Please remember recommended safety tips for water safety. Ice on all bodies of water throughout Hennepin County is variable in thickness.  Snow makes it difficult to determine the location of thin ice. Remember, no ice is ever completely safe. When children have time to explore the outdoors, they may wander onto the ice. People walking on frozen bodies of water should use caution and children should be supervised at all times when they are on or near lakes, rivers, ponds, and creeks.
