How Much Would a One-Way Eighth Avenue Increase Mainstreet Traffic?

City Engineer John Bradford shared estimates on what the change would mean for the downtown.

The main focus of a proposal to remake Eighth Avenue into a beautified one-way street has so far been on enticing light rail riders and Excelsior Boulevard drivers into Hopkins’ downtown. But the proposal isn’t just about attracting those who haven’t yet made it into the downtown; it’s about showing off the downtown to those already in or near the area. Planners estimate a northbound one-way would increase Mainstreet traffic by preventing those headed to Eighth Avenue businesses, like Chipotle or Curry ‘N’ Noodles, from simply turning around and heading back to Excelsior when they’re done. There is a rush of traffic during the lunch hour in that area. I would suggest that you follow-up and see how traffic might look during the busy lunch hour. I think that traffic patterns at different hours would also be a legitimate thing to consider.   more ›

Six Weeks Later: Injured Boy Upgraded to ‘Serious’ Condition

Sam Seward,10, was struck by a car in April. Seward’s father said his son has been “saved.”

Sam Seward, 10, was upgraded from critical condition to serious condition Tuesday, according to a Hennepin County Medical Center spokeswoman. Seward was struck by a car on April. According to a post by Seward’s father on the boy’s CaringBridge page, “He has had a good week…continuing to look better and trying to move around more.” As early as next week, Seward may undergo another surgery, although the reason has not been specified. Zoning And Planning Approves Upgrade to Navab Bros. Building

The upgrade would add 3,400 square feet to the building.

The Navab Brothers building is on track to get a makeover. The Zoning and Planning Commission signed off on a plan Tuesday night that would add 3,400 square feet to the building’s second floor, install an elevator and redo the exterior with glass and stone. “As you can see, it’s quite an improvement to the existing building,” City Planner Nancy Anderson told commissioners. Building owner Alex Ugorets said a small insurance agency is already lined up to move into the building, which is located at 7900 Excelsior Blvd. The upgrades make room for that company in addition to making the building “look like a nice office instead of an old factory. “I just tried to make it look modern,” he said.
