Enjoy an Eco-friendly Holiday Season

Reduce, reuse and recycle to make your holidays even greener.

As we deck the halls this holiday season, the overabundance of wrapping paper, plastic packaging and miscellaneous bits and pieces can be overwhelming. All of this will soon result in overflowing trash cans and more crowded landfills. According to the Ecology Center, Americans throw away an additional five million tons of trash—25 percent more than usual—between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Hopkins’ efforts to 'Go Green' has resulted in extra green

Recently named a GreenStep city, Hopkins is saving thousands of dollars through new eco-friendly initiatives.

Hopkins has made several eco-friendly changes in how it does businesses that have saved the more than $20,000 in taxpayer money since 2007, as well has helped the environment. Several of the city's office buildings and facilities received improvements, such as: The city also is in the process of transitioning streetlights and stoplights to LED and solar-powered lights. "Our [energy] bill is already half of what it used to be," said Norbert Kerber, Hopkins' building/equipment superintendent It's not just in utilities, though.
