Editor’s Note: The following announcement comes from Hopkins Public Schools. XinXing Academy students scored well above average on the Youth Chinese Test (YCT), an international standardized Chinese proficiency test administered by the Minnesota Confucius Institute on May 20, 2012. Second-grade XinXing students took the YCT3 test, which has two parts—listening and reading skills. The second-grade students scored at least 50 points higher than the needed passing score of 120. The third-grade students took the YCT4. This is the highest level of the YCT test series and measures listening, reading and writing skills. The Chinese program launches at West Junior High for the 2014-2015 school year. Spanish arrives at North Junior High in 2013-2014.
Hopkins Public Schools will expand its Chinese immersion program to West Junior High in the 2014-2015 school year and add a Spanish immersion program to North Junior High for 2013-2014. The district already has a Chinese immersion program at Eisenhower Elementary called XinXing Academy. That program started five years ago, and a 2014-2015 junior high launch allows those first students to continue in an immersion program as they advance in grades, said Jolene Goldade, a school district spokeswoman. The long-term plan is to bring the Chinese program to the high school, she added. Hopkins does not have a Spanish immersion program. About 60 students will perform Saturday at St. Catherine University.
XinXing Academy students have a big performance coming up this weekend. Third and fourth grade students from Hopkins' Chinese immersion school have been practicing with Minhua Chorus, a Chinese community choir, to perform in Minhua's "20 Years of Music" celebration, according to a Hopkins Public Schools news release. The concert celebrates Chinese heritage and Chinese culture in the United States, with Chinese and American choirs performing a variety of songs together. About 60 XinXing students will sing Dreaming of Home and Mother, a song written by an American composer and made popular by a Chinese artist who remade the song years later.
