Local Researcher Talks About The Hopkins Library’s 100 years

Kristin Kaspar researched and wrote a history of the Hopkins Library in celebration of the library’s centennial.

Kristin Kaspar studied history in Augsburg College and was a member of the school’s history club. She works as a software quality assurance analyst, so she considered it fortuitous when a chance encounter led to an offer to write an article on the Hopkins Library’s 100th anniversary. “It’s fate,” she marveled. “They didn’t know me. I didn’t have anything published.” Kaspar, a Hopkins resident, was well suited to delving into the library’s past, though. In addition to a love of writing and history, she grew up in Minnetonka, just on the other side of Shady Oak Road. Help the Hopkins Library Celebrate Its Centennial

The Hopkins Library invites residents to help celebrate its centennial anniversary by sharing a favorite library memory. The library merged with the Hennepin County Library system in 1973. But it was founded as a city library in 1912 after the Women’s Improvement League convinced officials of what was then called West Minneapolis to start a library in three rooms of the old city hall on Eighth and Excelsior Avenue (now Mainstreet). “The Hopkins’ Library’s centennial celebration is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to learn about the library’s history and to acknowledge its enduring importance to residents today,” a news release quoted Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison. “For 100 years, the Hopkins Library has …
