The Hopkins girls’ basketball coach was one of 11 coaches and activity directors who sat down for a panel discussion about the climate of coaching.
The Minnesota Legislature is considering a change to state law that would bar school districts from using parent complaints as the sole reason for letting a coach go. The proposal would add the following sentence to the omnibus policy and finance bill: The existence of parent complaints must not be the sole reason for a board to not renew a coaching contract. The legislation is in response to increasing non-renewals of coaches' contracts, with as many as 35 percent in one sport (boys' hockey) involving parent complaints, according to a Star Tribune report. Hopkins girls’ basketball coach Brian Cosgriff was one of 11 coaches and activity directors who sat down with KARE 11 for a panel discussion about the climate of coaching. He said the …

Alice Smith’s Brian Cosgriff started teaching Melvin D. Fletcher Jr. when the boy was 5 years old. St. Paul police shot Fletcher after they say he tried to rob a Kowalski’s.
Brian Cosgriff got to know Melvin D. Fletcher Jr. well over the years. Cosgriff—the Alice Smith physical education teacher and head girls’ basketball coach—started teaching Fletcher when the boy was five. Later, Fletcher and his older brother, Mandel Perkins, lived with Cosgriff periodically when things got hard. “He was a very low-key, easygoing guy—friendly, handsome athletic, mischievous—but never did I think he would hurt anybody,” Cosgriff said. “From the bottom of my heart, I know he was a good kid. I mean, I left my daughter with him.” But on Monday, police say Fletcher robbed the Grand Avenue Kowalski's Markets in St. Paul, armed with a gun. He was fatally shot after he fled through a rear entrance. The boy Cosgriff came to know …

Hopkins girls basketball Head Coach Brian Cosgriff is also a physical education teacher at Alice Smith.
Hopkins girls basketball Head Coach Brian Cosgriff returned to his fulltime job at Alice Smith to warm congratulations for his team’s state championship win Saturday evening. At an assembly Monday morning, students and staff surprised Cosgriff, a physical education teacher at the elementary school, with cake and silver and royal blue balloons. While Cosgriff coaches for the high school, Alice Smith students have embraced his team as their own. Posters supporting the Royals hang in the gym, as well as banners commemorating the team’s championships in 2006 and 2004. (Nikki, one of the sixth graders who presented the gifts to Cosgriff, joked that maybe this year’s championship, which followed one last year, would bring the banners up to date…

After winning Class AAAA titles in both girls’ and boys’ basketball last year, Hopkins is poised once again to make a title run.
On Saturday, fans will again hear the sounds of squeaking shoes and bouncing balls as the boys basketball season kicks off with the Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center. The girls will be at the event, too, but they’ve already got four wins under their belt—including an 80-point whooping of Minneapolis North to launch their season. Fans have become accustomed to such successes with Hopkins' basketball programs. Last year, both boys and girls teams won the Class AAAA title, and many already have them pegged as this season’s teams to beat. Hopkins has emerged as the preeminent basketball powerhouse of the past decade. The boys team is making a run at its fourth straight title and its seventh in eleven years. The girls have won three …

Kudos to the coach. While we over value high school sports, let's also take the time to fund a football stadium with hoped for gambling revenue. We're not the same as the Roman Empire, they didn't have electronic pull tabs.   more ›
