Survivors Reflect on 35W Bridge Collapse, Five Years Later

Wednesday, Aug. 1 marks the five-year anniversary of the collapse of the Interstate 35W Bridge in Minneapolis.

Survivors of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse have weighed in across the Twin Cities via Patch with their memories of that devastating day. The bridge, which spans the Mississippi River near the University of Minnesota campus, collapsed at about 6 p.m. on Aug. 1, 2007. Thirteen people were killed and more than 100 were injured. Rescue crews came from a nine-county area in Minnesota, and from St. Croix County in Wisconsin. United States Navy divers were deployed to help recover victims in the murky water. A new bridge was erected and completed in September 2008. A memorial to the victims is located near the west side of the bridge, next to Gold Medal Park. *** Minnetonka 35W Survivor Pens Book on Disaster Survivor of Bridge Collapse Opens…

(St. Margaret’s, on Bren Road east of Shady Oak Road, was known as the Bohemian Catholic Church.) St. Mary’s parishioners bought the current St. Joseph’s site with plans to replace their small church. But by the time money and materials were available to build it, Archbishop Austin Dowling had staked out opposition to ethnic churches because he…

Help the Hopkins Library Celebrate Its Centennial

Share your favorite memory, listen to an author’s talk or attend the anniversary open house.

The Hopkins Library invites residents to help celebrate its centennial anniversary by sharing a favorite library memory. The library merged with the Hennepin County Library system in 1973. But it was founded as a city library in 1912 after the Women’s Improvement League convinced officials of what was then called West Minneapolis to start a library in three rooms of the old city hall on Eighth and Excelsior Avenue (now Mainstreet). “The Hopkins’ Library’s centennial celebration is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to learn about the library’s history and to acknowledge its enduring importance to residents today,” a news release quoted Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison. “For 100 years, the Hopkins Library has …
