Alice Smith Teacher Receives Fox 9 Top Teacher Award

The TV station met Scott Stillman at his classroom Monday.

Fox 9 surprised Alice Smith sixth grade teacher Scott Stillman with its top teacher award, Hopkins Public Schools announced Monday. Anchor Jeff Passolt, the Fox 9 crew and Stillman’s wife and family unexpectedly met Stillman at his classroom door. The TV station gave him $900, a crystal award and a Subway Sandwich party for 100 people, said Maren Longfellow, a parent of one of Stillman's students and the person who nominated him for the award. Fox 9 broadcast the story at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Monday.

PHOTOS: Alice Smith Students Celebrate Their Heritage

The school had a parade and International Heritage Festival on Thursday.

Alice Smith students paraded through the school’s hallways Thursday afternoon in outfits and handmade crafts that celebrated their ethnic heritage. The parade is a colorful part of an event celebrating the school’s diversity. Later on Thursday, Alice Smith hosted an International Heritage Festival with potluck dinner, book fair, fair trade market, storytellers, cultural displays and more. The evening was capped off with an international fashion show followed by an Aztec dance group.

Hopkins Police Create New School Resource Officer Position

The officer will work to build bonds with local juveniles.

The Hopkins Police Department is creating its first school resource officer position as part of an effort to work with local juveniles, the agency announced Wednesday morning. “It’s been a priority of our agency to really connect with our youth,” Police Sgt. Michael Glassberg said. “The sooner you intervene and see kids on the wrong track, the greater the impact you can have.” Officer Jessica Thomas, who’s been with the department since 2006, has been tapped to be the new school resource officer (SRO). She’ll work with the following schools in Hopkins: “She’s very passionate about working with juveniles,” Glassberg said. Students showed off numerous projects at Thursday’s event.

Alice Smith students showed off their creative side at Thursday’s Imagination Fair. Students demonstrated experiments, exhibited their artwork and showed off models and projects they put together. Professional potter Joe Christensen also made giant pieces of pottery while children, parents and school staff watched. (PHOTOS) Volunteers Brighten Up Alice Smith

About 50 UnitedHealth Group volunteers visited the school last week.

Alice Smith got a spring makeover Thursday thanks to some hard work from UnitedHealth Group volunteers. About 50 volunteers from the company worked with HandOn Twin Cities to freshen up art and activities that encourage students to stay active. The volunteers: In all, they invested about 125 hours worth of work into the school. “(Volunteering) is just really an important part of the culture at UnitedHealth,” said Karen Trouba, a director in the company’s office of social responsibility.   Stay up to date on all your local news. (PHOTOS) Minnesota Health Commissioner Visits Alice Smith Friday

Edward Ehlinger biked, planted vegetables and exercised with the students during a visit that promoted health and wellness.

Health Commissioner Edward Ehlinger visited Alice Smith Elementary on Friday to recognize the school’s health and wellness efforts. Ehlinger biked through the Avenues neighborhood with students who rode their bikes to school. He ate a healthy breakfast in one of the classrooms and learned about the school’s nutrition program, including the Farm To School program that brings local produce onto the lunch menu. Ehlinger also planted vegetables in the school’s garden and exercised with the students during an "active break" that gets them moving in the classroom. Alice Smith has a host of programs to encourage healthy living, including a Safe Routes to School grant that promotes walking and biking to school and a fruit and vegetable snack …
