Obituary: Marie Giese

She was a nurse for Bloomington Public Schools and for the Hennepin County Home School.

  Editor’s Note: The following obituary comes from Gearty-Delmore Funeral Chapels.   ( Aug 21, 1929 - Feb 05, 2013 ) Hopkins Marie died February 5, 2013 at Sunrise of Minnetonka. Marie was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania; was a graduate of Minneapolis West High School and the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health Nursing.  She was a nurse for Bloomington Public Schools and for the Hennepin County Home School. Preceded in death by husband, Milt; parents, Frank and Mary Hill; brother, Frank. Marie was a loving and compassionate wife and mother who will be deeply missed by her children, Mark, Mary (Tom) Walker, and David; sister, Annie Crow.   Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Obituary: Jerry Stiele

Stiele co-owned and operated Hopkins Auto Body for over 50 years.

Survived by wife, Cindy; children, Julie Belisle (Charlie), Jerald (Lisa), Kevin Hokr, Linda Hokr and Kyle Hokr; grandchildren, Abby, Aidan, Vanessa, Cameron, Ainsley and Lily; mother, Donna Stiele; brothers, Ed and Dale; sisters, Sandy, Sue and Sally; nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.  Jerry co-owned and operated Hopkins Auto Body for over 50 years. U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison suffered gamely through an interview by host Stephen Colbert.

Minnesota's Fifth Congressional District was the subject of a "Better Know A District" segment on Comedy Central's "Colbert Report" Thursday. Host Stephen Colbert highlighted New Hope, the Hennepin Avenue Bridge and Prince in his intro, then "sat down ... in a room" with U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL-MN) for a wide-ranging, even scattershot interview that managed to touch on both Mohammed and Mary Tyler Moore. The "Fighting Fifth" is the second Minnesota district to be profiled on the "Colbert Report" and the 67th overall.

(Obituary) Ilene Pearl (Bartz) Martineau

Martineau was a Hopkins resident for almost 50 years.

  (The following obituary was submitted by Mary Helmbrecht.)   Martineau, Ilene Pearl (nee Bartz) Age 89, of Hopkins, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2012. Survived by daughter, Shelley; son, Michael; and sister, Dorine Neumann. Special thanks to Mary Helmbrecht. Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, René "Ray". Ilene loved to bake, play cards and go shopping for bargains. She was a lifetime member of the Hopkins VFW Women's Auxiliary where she often baked food for special events. Those fortunate to know and love her will forever treasure the gift of her strength and unconditional love. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her family and home were her world. Ron Paul is set to speak at the Minnesota Republican convention Friday, and party activists in the Fifth District are preparing for a possible Paul win—with one local activist saying "I get the feeling I'm witnessing history." Paul is poised to make a strong showing in Minnesota after congressional-district conventions gave him 20 of 24 available national delegates. The Texas congressman was denied a speaking slot at the 2008 state convention, but has proven a popular candidate and speaker here since—turning fans away, for example, from an over-capacity speech in Arden Hills shortly before Minnesota's 2012 caucus night. Obituary: LaVonne S. Nygren

The Hopkins High School graduate and her late husband, Carlton, co-owned Nygren’s Ladies Apparel with his parents.

  (The following obituary was submitted by Guilford Funeral Home in Guilford, CT.) LaVonne S. Nygren, 88, passed away on 27 March in the Health Center of Evergreen Woods Residential Community in North Branford, Connecticut. She had resided there the past ten years.  A Hopkins native, she and her late husband, Carlton, co-owned Nygren’s Ladies Apparel with his parents. A graduate of Hopkins High School, she was the daughter of Rose Lukas and Thorvald Skottegard, who operated a Danish bakery in Hopkins.
