Hopkins Public Schools Eisenhower Elementary School

952-988-4300

Listing Manager: Jolene Goldade

Eisenhower Elementary is a school focused on helping students thrive in a global society. The school is a "peace site," meaning it emphasizes teaching students with different backgrounds and experiences to work together.

Technology is an important part of the classrooms. All fifth graders receive a laptop to use each day and take home each evening. Teachers of third, fourth and fifth grades have interactive white boards. Every classroom has amplification systems to make it easier for students to hear.

XinXing Academy is probably the most unique part of the Eisenhower campus. The academy is a Chinese immersion program that began in 2007. It is a full immersion program in which immersion teachers use no English at all in the early years. Students from across the district and the Twin Cities are enrolled in the academy through open enrollment.

The University of Minnesota's Confucius Institute designated the school's classrooms as Confucius Classrooms, opening access to grants and training materials.

XinXing currently has two sections each of full-day kindergarten and first through third grades and will continue to add a grade level every year through the sixth grade.

Every year, district 270 gives parents the opportunity to supply feedback about the elementary schools through a survey per school. This year, every school in the district is currently wrapping up their surveys and the last day to respond is May 20th 2013. Guess what? Eisenhower has decided not to offer the parent survey this year. Wonder why...I guess that just perpetuates Eisenhower's inability and refusal to work with the parents of the district to make Eisenhower a better school. Time to get rid of the principal and superintendent.

The principal at this school has got to be one of the worst in the district. How does this person even have a job?

*

"Our Chinese immersion program is among the best in the state"

So the best part of this school has been outsourced to China?

*

I would agree with the other parents that this is a horrible school. I guess I would assume that it's a wonderful fit for Mrs Thompson-Burke because she works there, but when it comes right down to it, Eisenhower needs an overhaul to restore it to its once great status.

Our Chinese immersion program is among the best in the state. Sorry to hear that some parents have had issues; Eisenhower has been a wonderful fit for our family. Extremely committed, hard-working, and caring staff.

This used to be a great school when the previous principal was there, but the current principal has no time for the parents and just doesn't care about the safety of the students. If the Superintendent really cared about his students more than his fat pay-check, then he would probably address the issues going on over at Eisenhower. But he won't and that should let the residents of Hopkins and Minnetonka know how seriously he takes his job. Oh well, if your child is about to enter kindergarten, seriously consider finding a safer school within the district.

Email your state Rep. and have them support the following bill. Tell this school it's time the bullying ends.

HF 826 – the Safe and Supportive Minnesota Schools Act – began its trip through the legislative process this week. Authored by legislative veterans Representative Jim Davnie and the companion SF 783 by Sen. Scott Dibble, the bill is crafted using recommendations from the Prevention of Bullying Task Force.

Speaking to the need for this bill, Rep Davnie referred to the weakness of the current model bullying policy used in most Minnesota school districts. He said in the 50 states, only Montana ranks below us and they don’t even have a bullying policy. Rep Davnie called work to provide safe environments that improve relationships among and between students and staff “the next generation of education reform” and “a key lever in academic achievement.” The bill impacts charter and all other public schools.

Not an exhaustive list, but included in the bill:

-A much stronger state model policy dealing with student bullying, cyberbullying, harassment and intimidation, safe and supportive school grant program,
-Safe and supportive school programming
-Staff development
-Prohibits reprisals or retaliation [by school administration] against any person who reports bullying

I would suggest that the superintendent address the bullying issues that are so prevalent over at Eisenhower. He refuses to respond to emails, he refuses parents phone calls, he apparently has no interest in the safety of our children. Bullying complaints at Eisenhower have skyrocketed since the current principal was put into place...where are the answers that the parents are seeking? Where is the school board and why aren't they addressing Dr. Schultz's refusal to address this communities concern over bullying at one of his schools? WHERE!!!

OMG, someone just emailed me about this article and I almost fell off my chair laughing when I saw the "Peace Site" comment. Bullying? check, Unresponsive administration? check, Lack of communication to the parents? check. "All fifth graders receive a laptop to use each day and take home each evening" ummm, starting when? not this year anyway.

There seems to be a lot of bullying at this school and the principal and administration seem to do nothing about it. If you son or daughter is being bullied at this school, let us know, we have heard from a lot of parents lately of a major increase in bullying.

Eisenhower Elementary is the reason the public school system is a failure. Poor leadership by a less than mediocre principal and staff should make any Hopkins parent think twice before subjecting their child to this underperforming school.
