Back-to-School Donations Run Critically Short

ResourceWest has several hundred more children requesting school supplies than it can fully help.

ResourceWest has only about half the school supplies and monetary donations it needs for its annual back-to-school drive.

As of Tuesday, the organization had only enough supplies for 600 children—even though 1,037 children have registered to receive school supplies so far, according to the organization.

ResourceWest has also received just $5,800 in monetary donations for purchasing school supplies compared to the $15,000 it received last year.

If the organization doesn’t receive sufficient supplies, organizers will have to consider reducing the amount of supplies each individual student receives.

“Every student will get something. They just may not get as much,” said Judy Elling, ResourceWest’s executive director.

Volunteers will distribute school supplies to the students Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. ResourceWest asks those who can to drop off supplies by Wednesday, when the organization’s office will be staying open until 7 p.m.

ResourceWest is located at 915 Mainstreet in Hopkins. Supplies can also be dropped off at several drop-off locations throughout the west metro.
