Sydney Coffey Named MAAC Rookie of the Week — Again

The former Hopkins star was recognized for her performance this weekend against Rider and Loyola.

For the second time this year, former Hopkins basketball star Sydney Coffey has been recognized as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

“Coffey continues to cement herself as one of the best rookies in the MAAC, averaging nine points and 4.5 rebounds while making her fourth career start in Marist (College’s) two dominating wins this past weekend,” the conference stated.

She started Sunday against Loyola, scored 16 points and snagged four rebounds—in addition to blocking two shots and going five for six from the free throw line. Working off the bench Friday versus Rider, she grabbed five rebounds.

Coffey is the quickest player to start under Marist Head Coach Brian Giorgis, who’s in his 11th season as the team’s head coach. She won her first Rookie of the Week award in November, after her first start and third collegiate game.

In high school, she was a member of the Royals girls basketball team that won back-to-back state championships in 2011 and 2012 and a Miss Basketball finalist.
