Hopkins' Nia Coffey Helps USA U19 Team Take Fifth-Straight Gold Medal

The team trounced France in a 61-28 victory.

Despite France's best attempts, Hopkins High School basketball star Nia Coffey and her USA U19 team clinched another gold medal in a 61-28 victory at the FIBA World Championship Sunday night.

The win brings the U19 team its fifth-consecutive world championship title. According to USA Basketball, the U.S. has claimed six of the last seven U19 gold medals and boasts a 54-4 record over that span, while owning an all-time 66-12 record in U19 play.

The USA Basketball Junior National Team Committee selected Coffey in May for the 12-member team following four days of trials involving 33 athletes age 19-years-old and younger.

Coffey had a wonderful 2012-2013 season with the Hopkins Royals. She was named the player of this year’s state championship game, chosen as Breakdown Sports USA’s No. 2 player in the state and honored with All State recognition. She also played in the McDonald’s All-American game, and received the Purple Team’s MVP award at this year’s Women's Basketball Coaches Association High School All-America Game.
