Hopkins Girls Track And Field Wins Section Title

Royals girls qualify five individuals, four relay teams to state; boys sending three individuals, four relays to Class AA meet.

The Hopkins girls track and field team won the Section 6AA championship after two days of competition on their home track, while the Royals boys finished fourth amongst the 12-team meet after Friday's final runs.

The Hopkins girls logged 146.75 points to finish 43 points ahead of second place Minnetonka as five individuals qualified for state in six events, as did all four Royals relay teams.

Mariah Witt won the section championship in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with respective times of 15.84 and 44.56 seconds.

Hannah Borowsky won the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 13.62 seconds, with teammate Kayla Goeman finishing second in the event with a 2:17.33; Bridget Sweeney won the 400-meter dash in 56.33 seconds.

The Hopkins foursome of Julia Wiemer, Dami Manuel-Moore, Mary Tanoe and Taylor Anderson won the 4x100-meter relay in 49.14 seconds, as did the Royals quartet of Witt, Stephanie Rouse, Anna Cich and Bridget Sweeney in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:56.35.

Hopkins' Rouse, Mary Klecker, Goeman and Borowsky won the 4x800-meter relay in 9:25.23, with the Royals' 4x200-meter relay squad of Taylor and Elise Anderson, Tanoe and Sweeney qualifying for state with a runner-up time of 1:42.14.

Hopkins Boys: Fourth-Place Finish At Sections

The Hopkins boys took fourth at the sectionals, accumulating 97.3333 points as three Royals individuals and all four relay teams are heading to state.

Austin Salargo won the 400-meter dash in 48.18, with Damilola Mafe taking first in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.36; Marcus Okpalaeke earning the Royals' lone field event qualification with a throw of 48 feet, 4 inches in the shot put.

Hopkins won the 4x200-meter relay with the quartet of Victor Oseko, Julius Williamson, ShaDonte McMorris and Salargo finishing in a time of 1:28.50.

The Royals took second in three more relays and will send the 4x100-, 4x400- and 4x800-meter events. 

Laron Broadway, Williamson, Mafe and Shaheed Hickman (42.81) took second in the 4x100; Michael Swanson, Connor Benton, McMorris and Salargo were second (3:22.73) in the 4x400; Thomas Heegaard, Kyle Rossow, Samuel Jacobwith and Benton were second (8:04.11) in the 4x800.

The state Class AA meets will take place at Hamline University June 10-11.
