Hopkins Girls, Boys Secure Wins at Tip Off Classic

The girls beat Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. The boys beat Centennial 73-62.

Both Hopkins boys’ and girls’ teams came away with wins Saturday at the Ninth-Annual Breakdown Sports USA Tip Off Classic at the Lindbergh Center.

In what Breakdown Sports USA called “arguably the most physical game of the day” the Royals’ girls’ team defeated Kansas team Olathe Northwest 65-51. Hopkins led by just five points at the end of the first half but surged ahead in the second.

Hopkins senior Nia Coffey, whom Breakdown Sports USA ranked second in its preseason rankings, led the game with 19 points. Freshman Nia Hollie was second for the Royals with 12 points.

With the win, the Hopkins girls remain unbeaten. For their next game, they’ll travel to Lakeville South on Dec. 4.

In one of two boys games at this weekend’s girls’ Tip Off Classic, the Royals boys beat Centennial 73-62 despite being down 10 points at one point in the first half. Hopkins closed the gap to a four-point deficit by the end of the half and dominated the second—outscoring Centennial 38-25.

Junior Kamali Chambers led the game with 20 points. Senior Nick Johnson’s 14 points made him second for the Royals, while junior Jake Wright followed with 12 points.

The Royals will next travel to Rosemount on Friday. They’ll also play against Tartan in the boys’ Tip Off Classic Saturday at Minnetonka High School.
