MULTIMEDIA: Hopkins Boys, Girls Nordic Skiers Take Section 6 Titles

Seniors Harris Dirnberger and Sarah Benton finished first overall in their races.

Both Hopkins boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams claimed Section 6 championships Monday at Theodore Wirth Park.

Hopkin senior Harris Dirnberger finished first overall, with a total time of 29:44.6. Teammate, senior Jakob Ellingson, took second with a time of 29:50.8. Senior Bjorn Leach rounded out the list of Hopkins skiers in the top 10 with a ninth place, 32:41.0 finish.

The boys’ team scored a total of 378 points in the race, beating second-place Minneapolis Southwest by a comfortable 25-point margin.

The girls’ team had a tighter two-point margin—scoring 375 points to Robbinsdale Armstrong’s 373 points. Hopkins senior Sarah Benton took first with an overall time of 35:04.8. Sophomore Siena Ellingson finished third at 36:05.4.

Freshman Claire Benton was just outside the top 10 with an 11th-place, 38:36.0 finish.

The wins qualify both teams for the state tournament taking place Feb. 14 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
