Hopkins Baseball Goes Winless at Gopher Classic

The team came up short in all the games played at the largest American Legion tournament in the United States.

Hopkins will not advance past pool play in the 2013 Jim Hanus Gopher Classic Baseball Tournament.

The Gopher Classic is the largest American Legion tournament in the United States. Ninety teams are playing at 15 Twin Cities sites between July 12 and July 16.

All 90 teams competed in pool play for the right to advance to the single-elimination championship rounds. The 15 pool winners and one second-place team will advance.

However, Hopkins finished pool play with an 0-5 record. It lost to Team Saskatchewan 8-5 Friday then lost 6-3 to Academy of Stars at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

It followed that up with an 8-0 loss to Fridley Gold Eagle at 7 p.m. Saturday, a game that only lasted five innings.

Hopkins started Sunday at 9 a.m. with a 7-3 loss to Chaska then finished the tournament with a 15-11 loss to Anoka in an 11:30 a.m. game.

The championship rounds will be played Monday and Tuesday at Veterans Field at Minnetonka High School.
