Boyd's goal lifts Hopkins girls hockey over Crimson

Sixth-seeded Royals advance to play Benilde-St. Margaret's in its next round.

The Hopkins girls hockey team pulled an upset Saturday in Section 6AA play, as the sixth-seeded Royals defeated third-seeded Maple Grove at the Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis.

Hopkins will face  Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Wednesday in the section semifinals.

The Royals (9-13-4) used two third-period goals to twice take the lead from Maple Grove. Caitlin Essel scored to put Hopkins up 2-1 just 1:24 into the period — giving Hopkins its first lead of the game. After the Crimson’s Courtney Umland tied the game at 2-2, Royals forward Corbin Boyd scored the game-winning goal at the 5:36 mark.

Hopkins goalie Erin O’Neil stopped 26 of 28 shots on the day. Hopkins went 0-for-7 on the power play but still picked up the win.
