A healthful meal can offer more than just good nutrition—it is also the secret ingredient for building a strong community. Just ask the organizers of the Hopkins Summer Food Program.

A USDA grant is making it possible for Hopkins Public Schools’ school nutrition department, Royal Cuisine, to offer free hot meals to school-age children on the weekdays at three locations throughout the Hopkins School District. Each meal consists of a healthful entrée, fruit, vegetable and milk. The majority of the entrées are made from raw ingredients and prepared from scratch. All children under the age of 18 are eligible for free meals. Adults who accompany a child may purchase a meal for $2.

Last year, the Hopkins Summer Food Program was sponsored at two sites. The event allowed families in the community to come together and connect with one another, creating a sense of community that expanded well beyond the food.

“Sitting down and eating whole, unprocessed foods as a unit—whether it be a family, neighborhood or class of students—promotes community engagement by providing daily opportunities for interpersonal dialogue, sharing thoughts, experiences and resources,” said Barb Mechura, school nutrition director for Hopkins Public Schools.
The Summer Food Program is funded through a USDA grant that targets geographic areas with high populations of students who qualify for free and reduced meals. The goal is to make sure students continue to have access to nutritious meals during the summer months.
