School Colors: Students Show Their Work at Hopkins Arts Center

The Youth Art Month exhibition runs through April 12.

Tuesday’s opening reception at the offered something for everyone’s taste. There were abstract faces fashioned after Picasso’s works. There were realistic paintings barely distinguishable from photographs. There were clay sculptures and wire-frame models.

The variety is no accident. The reception celebrated the opening of the 11th-annual Youth Art Month Show. Hopkins art teachers selected 20 to 30 pieces of art from each of the district’s schools—in all, showcasing the work of 275 students, said Sandy Merry, the district’s fine arts coordinator.

The young artists browsed the gallery throughout the reception, pointing out their work to parents and admiring other students’ pieces.

“Oh my goodness, the students are so excited to see their work hung,” Merry said.

But the exhibition is also a treat for the community. The students described how they crafted their artwork and why they chose the features they did.
