Hopkins Students Win 29 Scholastic Art Awards

Student Michael Semaghe had his work voted one of five 'Best of Show' pieces.

Hopkins High School art and photography students won 29 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards, and student Michael Semaghe had his work voted one of five “Best of Show” pieces.

Semaghe, who received the Gold Key award and was the American Vision Nominee in the drawing category, will continue on to the national competition in New York, where one piece will be selected to represent Minnesota in the National Art Exhibition.

The Minnesota Scholastic Art Award is the most prestigious art recognition for high school students. The 2012-2013 Minnesota Scholastic Art Exhibition is open to the public daily from Feb. 7 to March 3 in the College of Visual Arts Gallery, 173 Western Avenue North in St. Paul. The gold key award ceremony will be at the Minnesota History Center on March 3.

Gold Key winners will have their pieces exhibited at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design Gallery from Feb. 7 to March 3. An awards ceremony will take place March 3.

Only 17 portfolio entries earned the Gold Key award in Minnesota. Hopkins student Kelly Marble was among those winners.

The Gold Key winners will move on to the national competition in the spring, with a reception at Carnegie Hall in New York. National winners will be announced in May.
