Hopkins Students Go 'All Natural'
Girl Scouts organized a day without makeup to emphasize inner beauty.
Kamila Komschlies is no stranger to using makeup. The Hopkins sophomore regularly applies cover-up, foundation, powder, eyeliner and mascara before heading to school.
That wasn’t the case Friday, though. Komschlies and dozens of other students went about their day sans makeup—although sometimes a bit self-consciously.
“I feel like I look sickly,” she conceded.

The makeup-free day was an event called “All Natural Day” that Komschlies and others in Girl Scout Troop 10266 organized at Hopkins High School to raise awareness about natural beauty and inner beauty. The project is part of their Girl Scout Gold Award work.
The troop sold about 180 T-shirts with bright pink letters that spelled out "All Natural/Flaunt What You've Got." Students and female staff at the school bought the T-shirts then wore them to school together—without makeup.

Komschlies said banding together gave the girls more confidence to forgo makeup, knowing that they wouldn’t be singled out.
In doing so, they were able appreciate their own unique beauty. None of the boys made hurtful comments, and many of the girls told them how good they looked without makeup.
Maintaining a healthy body image isn’t always easy. Komschlies said girls want to impress others and added that she’s known girls with eating disorders. She hopes the makeup-free day will help her classmates understand that people aren’t always judging how they look.
“You can be strong and confident being treated for who you are,” she said.
