Glen Lake Elementary staff and students will celebrate their new walking paths with an all-school sidewalk parade on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. The sidewalks were made possible by a $350,000 Safe Routes to school grant that also supported other Hopkins schools.

The sidewalks provide more options for Glen Lake students to walk and bike to school.  They also create handicapped accessible walkways at the back of the school that extend from the lower playground to Bellevue Drive.

The new walking paths were made possible by the Safe Routes to School program, which helps develop ways for students to walk and bike to school. Glen Lake Elementary partnered with the city of Minnetonka for this project.

“The new sidewalks are a dream come true,” said Beth Potter, Principal of Glen Lake Elementary. “They will help us promote walking and biking to school on safe walkways.  We sincerely thank the staff at the city of Minnetonka and the Hopkins District for partnering with us and supporting the Safe Routes to School project.”

With legislative extensions, the Federal Safe Routes to School Program has apportioned nearly $1.15 billion to states as of Sept. 30, 2012.
