GED Graduates Celebrate Success

The graduates celebrated their accomplishments June 5 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

An enthusiastic, and proud, crowd gathered at Tuesday, June 5 for Adult Options In Education’s GED graduation ceremony. More than 50 graduates participated in the ceremony recognizing their accomplishments of passing the five GED exams.

Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison delivered the keynote speech. Monica Hernandez, who studied in Minnetonka and Lokundo Lohese, a student from St. Louis Park, delivered the student speeches.

Amanda Stadther, a Hopkins student originally from New Zealand, was awarded the Bernice Brooks Memorial Scholarship. Stadther, who has already started college courses, will use the $500 scholarship to help fund her dream of becoming a professional photographer.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar sent a video message of congratulations to the graduates.

Adult Options In Education graduation is a wonderful celebration of success for our non-traditional graduates, family and friends,” said Jano Kono, coordinator of Adult Options In Education. “Our students can now proudly go on to better jobs, skills training programs and college.

Adult Options In Education offers free GED preparation classes at sites in Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park. Online GED preparation is available through i-Pathways. With i-Pathways, students prepare for the exams using web-based preparation tools while still having the support of a local Adult Options In Education teacher.

Adults who have began taking their GED exams would benefit to prepare and test now, before the exams change in 2014. Adults who have not completed the battery of tests by January, 2014 will have to start over at the beginning.

Adult Options In Education is an adult basic education program supported through the community education departments of the Hopkins, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park school districts, along with the Hennepin County Correctional Facility.
