WATCH: Simon Helps Gay Marriage Bill Through Committee

The Hopkins and St. Louis Park legislator has been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage.

Hopkins and St. Louis Park Rep. Steve Simon (DFL-District 46B) was among the legislators who helped a same-sex marriage bill cleared the House Ways and Means Committee on Monday night.

The voice vote before Ways and Means was the final committee vote before the bill heads to the House floor.

Watch the committee discuss the bill in the video above.

Simon has been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage. Two years ago, a video of Simon went viral when he asked in a floor speech, “How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?”

In a Monday Minnesota Public Radio article, Simon defended the latest bill against charges that it would infringe on religious beliefs. The local legislator said the Minnesota bill has the strongest protections of any comparable bill in the country.

And on Tuesday, he tweeted, “I've not seen 1 example of a US legislator who has regretted vote for same-sex marriage, but I've seen many examples of opposite regret.”

The House will have a final floor vote on the same-sex marriage bill Thursday, the Star Tribune reported.

Thanks Representative Simon, Rep. Winker and Senator Latz, for taking well thought out and sometimes controversial stands. This bill protects people with sincerely held convictions who oppose marriage equality. Religious institutions continue to control their membership and religious practices as stated in the bill and US constitution. It is also time to recognized the rights of same sex families and afford their children equal rights and protections. Stable loving families are good for our community. While some people will be uncomfortable with marriage equality, constitutional rights to equal protection are prime. Several states and the Supreme Court are moving in this direction. Again thank you for taking difficult stands.
