Hopkins Post Office Avoids Closure Study

The Postal Service is studying 3,700 post offices for possible closure.

The Hopkins Post Office escaped inclusion on the U.S. Postal Service’s list of post offices being studied for possible closure.

The agency released a list Tuesday morning of 3,700 post offices it will be studying to determine customer needs. Minnesota has 88 retail locations under review—but none in the west metro.

The Postal Service faces diminishing need for full-fledged post offices as more customers use the Web, smart phones, automated stations and third-party retailers that offer postal services.

More than 35 percent of the Postal Service’s retail revenue comes from “expanded access locations such as grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, open 24/7,” a news release stated, quoting Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.
