Thieves Strike Cars in Another Underground Garage

The garages at Minnetonka's Conservatory Apartments were the latest hit in a series of auto break-ins.

(Updated 1:36 p.m. Aug. 9) Several residents of the in Minnetonka — just across the border from Hopkins — awoke Tuesday to find their cars broken into. The thefts are at least the third mass break-in since June at Hopkins-area underground garages.

About 40 vehicles at the Smetana Road complex had items stolen, Minnetonka police said. No cars were stolen, and no one has been arrested.

At least one of the garages was unsecured at the time.

This week's thefts are just the latest in a rash of garage burglaries in the area that had already claimed about 50 cars broken into and one car stolen.

 in underground garages along Blake Road and Hiawatha Avenue. Thieves also in an underground garage on 11th Street South in downtown Hopkins. 

The thieves caused an estimated $20,000 in damage during those two incidents. They stole mostly electronic items, such as GPS units. They also took a car during the second incident.

It's not yet known whether the Hopkins and Minnetonka break-ins are connected.

Hopkins police the earlier thefts.  for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved.
