Oakdale Police Arrest Missing Hopkins Check Forgery Suspect

Edward David Stahlmann faces forgery-related charges in a handful of jurisdictions.

A man who was wanted for allegedly giving a fake check to a Hopkins landlord is in jail after Oakdale police arrested him on suspicion of another check forgery scheme.

Officers in the east metro community arrested 30-year-old Edward David Stahlmann at about 1 p.m. Tuesday, said Oakdale Community Affairs Officer Michelle Stark. He was transferred to the Hennepin County jail Wednesday night, where he is being held on $40,000 bond.

The Oakdale officers arrested Stahlmann in connection with an incident in Maplewood, Stark said. Investigators have forwarded a case to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution of offering a forged check.

A case has also been forwarded to the Washington County Attorney’s Office for consideration of two charges of possession of counterfeit checks.

Stahlmann came to the attention of Hopkins officers when a landlord told police that Stahlmann gave his son-in-law a fraudulent $2,400 rent check April 13. The bank said the logo and design were inconsistent with the actual design and logo and that the routing number went to a different bank.

When the landlord went to look for Stahlmann, the 30-year-old had left the property. Police looked for Stahlmann at his parents’ North St. Paul home, but his mother said he no longer lived with them and that she didn’t know where he was.

For the Hopkins offense, Stahlmann has been charged with offering a forged check—a felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The Hennepin County jail roster states that the Bloomington Police Department also has a check forgery case against him, while the Minneapolis Police Department has check forgery and theft by swindling cases against him.

Stahlmann is set to appear in court again Wednesday.
